"Graphics Card Not Recognised"

So I've been playing for about 7 months now. Everything has been totally fine right?

Yesterday I did a little bit of family creation, got off, came back hours later, and now all of the sudden it's saying that my graphics card isn't recognised and restored my visuals to default settings.

My thing is, I want it in Windowed mode, but like, smaller. And no matter what I do, I can't seem to fix it. I can physically shrink the window down by clicking/dragging, but that makes the UI/text smaller with it.

I've edited the options.ini file. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game, I've updated my graphics driver, but it wont fix. I'm seeing posts like "but this mod" but it was running just fine without the mod before. I just need whatever happened in the last 24 hours, to unhappen. I can't System Restore the computer because I don't have any restore points either. It's not NVIDIA related either.

Help please, I'm not a computer person, so, speak to me like you would your tech illiterate grandma

  • xJC4Rx  Please open DeviceConfig.log, in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, copy the first 40 or so lines (stop at Options), and paste them here.  You can delete your user and computer names, about 20 lines down; the file doesn't contain any other personal information.

For windowed mode, does it help to change the size, then quit and restart the game?  The UI is supposed to be a certain number of pixels tall and wide, so shrinking the window shouldn't change its absolute size.

What do you mean about "but this mod"?  If you're saying there's a mod to fix the UI size, it would be best to deal with the other problems first.

  • xJC4Rx  Well there's your issue: your computer doesn't have a proper graphics driver installed and is instead using the basic Microsoft driver, which is going to lead to terrible performance relative to what you would see otherwise.  You'll need to reinstall the proper driver.

If you don't know how to do that, I can provide instructions, but I need to know what graphics card you have.  Click Windows key-X, select the Device Manager, expand Display Adapters, and list what you see there.  You may have one entry or two, depending on your setup.

Just in case there's a system issue underlying this, please also provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

    Radeon RX550/550 Series

I've done the whole "update driver" thing, but it always says "up to date"

I've gone into the Deviceconfig txt and tried setting it to the Radeon, but that didn't work either.

It WAS working totally fine for months, I'm not sure what change made it just randomly decide to stop using my graphics card.

  • xJC4Rx  The dxdiag confirms the issue: the graphics driver isn't properly installed.  But it is present, so please do a clean uninstall of the driver and install a fresh copy.  Here's how:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

Once you've done this, launch Sims 3 again and see whether the DeviceConfig lists your RX 550.

As a side note, DeviceConfig is output only, as in, the game writes to it but doesn't read it.  So editing it has no effect at all.

    That did it.

Thank you so much for your help. It's back in windowed mode, in the correct size, and even updated giving me more display options to chose from.

The DeviceConfig recognises the Radeon as well.
