@puzzlezaddict thank you for your explanation. I added someone to my active family. I apparently still could do that. I edited the university town. There I saw that my car was still there somehow. I went back to my hometown and my household suddenly reappeared. I clicked on my household and changed it to my active family. I haven't got a clue what exactly made my household reappear again.
@Assiditty It sounds like there was enough data to salvage playable sims, although I'd still be worried about save corruption. It's a good idea to use "save as" to make a backup copy of the save now, in case you notice any issues going forward.
