New laptop

Hi. I just ordered this laptop https://www.currys.co.uk/products/msi-gf63-thin-15-15.6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i7-rtx-4050-512-gb-ssd-10272750.html

I play sims 3 and 4 and was wondering whether to install the games on the SSD or not. Im bot very tech savvy and im not sure if ill need to do anything else to make the game work. I remember last time I changed, the video card wasn’t recognised and someone on here helped me with all that and then I had to cap the frame rates. Thanks.

  • Lilia1971  You will need to manually cap the framerates, which you can probably do through the Nvidia Control Panel.  (I say probably because some people report the limit doesn't stick.)  The CP has a Max Frame Rate setting, which you can apply globally or for TS3.exe (EA App install) or TS3W.exe (disc or Steam install).  Let me know if you need further help with this.

The only other step you'll need to take is to apply one of the Alder Lake workarounds listed here:

The patch is the most convenient and the Task Manager method the most reliable, but all three accomplish the same thing.

Getting your GPU recognized isn't strictly necessary, but if you'd like to do it anyway, I can help with that.  Launch the game once, open DeviceConfig.log (in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3), copy the info between Graphics Device Info and Options, and paste it here.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll have a look when I install it and get in touch if I need help. Do you think I should install in the SSD or will there not be enough space?

  • Lilia1971  The SSD has more than enough space for Sims 3 and 4 plus all packs (a total of about 32 and 60 GB, respectively), and a large pile of custom content, as well as saves and other data.  You should periodically check how much free storage you have, and try to keep at least 50 GB free if you can, but that shouldn't be a problem unless you hoard cc or never delete old files.
