Problem trying to play Sims 3 for the first time?

I've tried lowering Windows and antivirus firewalls, deactivating antivirus, and using Google public DNS, this is my second install of Sims 3 on a second computer, it still says it has trouble connecting to the EA server when I try to play? I tried solving this by myself, but I'm out of ideas. I'm using a Windows 8, and the Sims 3 used to play fine on Windows 7 so I don't think its a system requirements problem.

The old computer was Windows 7, this is Windows 8, and I have IE 10 on this computer. Clock is set correctly.

I checked for updates and I have an 'optional' update to download, however I'm pretty sure it'll overload my daily download allowance and I have to do it later. This is the webpage which describes what that update fixes:

To my untrained eyes it doesn't seem like this would help.

    Thanks for helping!

Maybe I should upgrade to Windows 8.1, or Internet Explorer 11 or both?

No, it should auto log you out. That's what that is for.

I would contact customer support so they can take a look at your account.
