Problems with DCCache + "CurrentGame.sims3"

Hello! First time posting here, sad it's under these circumstances. Okay, here's the story: I was trying to clean up my cache files as usual, accidentally deleted the files in my DCCache folder, then permanently deleted everything from my trash bin. Freaked out, tried to recover them, I couldn't. I don't usually back things up because I'm dumb (this will be changing going forward, dw), BUT I remembered that I would have a copy of my entire "The Sims 3" folder on my USB when I got a new laptop and had to transfer everything. I found my old DCCache files dated from 2020-2021 and tried to paste them into my current Cache folder. All of my cc reappeared in the launcher under "Installed", but now when I load the game it brings up "New Game" and my current game is gone. So I removed the old Cache files, loaded it again, and then my current game comes back! I'm assuming the issue has something to do with how old my cache files are? Is there anyway I can integrate them into my current game smoothly? I tried copying and pasting my current save file into the "CurrentGame.sims3" folder but when I load the game, it's still showing up as "New Game" and then when I checked the folder the save file was gone. I've done this twice so I guess that's not the answer. Any help would be super appreciated, thanks!

  • @BandsAndRoses  The CurrentGame folder should always be empty unless you're playing and actually have a save loaded.  Otherwise, the game empties this folder when you quit.  So placing files in this folder won't accomplish anything.

It's odd that your old DCCache files would cause your save to not show up at all; I've actually never heard of that.  If you create a new save with these files in place and save your progress, does that save show up the next time you load the game?  Before testing, make sure to back up your saves, or just the entire Saves folder, just in case something goes wrong.

I don't know that the above will change anything.  If it doesn't, or you don't want to wrestle with this problem anymore, you can try recovering the files from Downloads inside the old Sims 3 folder.  This folder contains anything you've downloaded from the Store or Exchange, and moving the files to Downloads within the new Sims 3 folder should make the launcher read them properly and allow you to reinstall the content.

And in case it's not totally clear, DCCache contains your installed Store content (in bundled .ebc files) and launcher-installed custom content (in .dbc files).  So you shouldn't have lost any other content.

@puzzlezaddict Hii! Firstly, I'm not sure what you mean by create a new save because my main issue is that, with the old cache files in place, I have no activate game. Do you mean to create a new random sim family and then try saving? Secondly, I have all my hair, clothes and makeup cc merged, so thankfully I don't have to worry about those. It seems that the only cc in my dccache file was furniture because when I load the game without the files it says "Some items are missing" and it replaces all my cc furniture with regular furniture. When I do have the files in places and they load in the launcher, it's only furniture that comes up. I mention this because all I ever had in my downloads folder was hair, makeup and clothes, I did have a couple lots so I am wondering if that's where the furniture came from. I rarely ever downloaded single furniture, but new stuff would always pop up and I just assumed maybe it was hidden within the other stuff I downloaded. Anyways, my point is that the cc I'm missing is not in my old downloads folder, that's only hair, makeup and clothes. Do you think the lots may have something to do with it?

@BandsAndRoses  Yes, I meant click New Game at the Main Menu, pick a random household so you don't need to use CAS, let the game clock run for a few minutes, save your progress, quit, restart your computer, launch Sims 3 again, and see whether that save shows up.  If it does, there's something about the old saves that isn't working with the files from DCCache.  If the new save does NOT load, that suggests looking elsewhere.

A lot (or world, or even household) could definitely come with other custom content attached, including furniture.  So you could presumably get the furniture back by reinstalling those lots.  The lots would still show up in-game even after you deleted the contents of DCCache because installing them creates corresponding files in Library.  (In fact, for a lot with no cc, you could just save the created Library file and move it to a new Sims 3 folder, and the lot would work as normal without needing to be reinstalled through the launcher.  This also applies to households.)

Do you have those lots?  If so, you could reinstall them into your existing folder.  Or, if you don't want duplicate items in your in-game bin, install them into a new Sims 3 folder and move over the DCCache files but not the Library entries.
