Question for experienced simers

Spoiler
Spoiler
Hi to all simers

I really need help. I had a lot of experience with sims but this time I feel like I can not get my head round what is happening.

Common problem - black loading screen...

So I have noticed scrip mods really make that happen...

I have fixed this issue before when I cleaned all mod folders with over 900 items in it. There was one mod which was causing all the game issues and that took me ages to find.

This time is a bit complicated.

I was downloading some stuff cc and mods.

Noticed my cc would not install through the launcher and would bring '' not responding'' installation in black only after a while me installing my cc . So I tried installing things one by one ... same issue... Removed Mods folder and it worked.... But...

Every time I put my Mods folder back in and try to start the game there is black screen and game is not loading...

I know what you going to say... Issue with the Mod folder! It is but I deleted the mods which I have downloaded and all my old mods always worked but not this time.

I tried placing them by little folders and it seems like all my organised folders seem to cause issues. For example : my Nars folder is fine .

I am so fed up... I know my organised folders worked before...

And yes I have deleted cache files.

Where is the issue? what could effect my old mods? Is it possible that few new mods or loads of cc could have effected my old mods?

Any advice would be much appreciated as I am running out of ideas ... I don't feel like I want to pull each mod and keep trying the game as its over 900 of them ☹️ .

Thanks ❤️

@Garage_Queen  I think the best approach at this point is to download a fresh copy of the Mods Framework and all your NRaas mods, add those, and then start downloading new copies of your other mods and adding them.  I understand that some may be hard to find, but many aren't, for example Buzzler, icarus_allsorts, velocitygrass, and several others host their mods at Mod the Sims.  The reason I keep suggesting that you download new copies of the mods is that you can make sure you have the latest versions of all of them rather than having to compare version numbers or dates.

If a fresh download of a given mod causes problems in the clean folder, with nothing else in it except for other freshly downloaded mods, please let me know which mod or mods aren't working properly.

With an Origin install, you wouldn't have received any updates to Sims 3 itself, and an Origin update wouldn't affect how mods work.

  • @Garage_Queen  It's unlikely that store or custom content installed through the launcher would cause a problem with your mods, that is if your mods aren't outdated in some way.  So it's probably one or more mods that are causing the issue.

From here, the fastest way to test is with the 50/50 method.  Remove half your mods (or add half of them if they're currently all removed) and test.  If you still get a black screen, remove half of the remainder and test again.  If the game works fine now, add half of the ones you just removed.  With this method, it would only take you 10 tests to sort through your 900 files, that is if you only have one problem mod.  But since you might have multiple, you'll need to test all the files at least once.

It may help to start by putting the game in windowed mode, which you can do at the Main Menu; I take it you can get that far with no mods present.  With the game in windowed mode, you can force-close it from the Task Manager if necessary, which should save time in testing.

Each time you add or remove content from your user folder, be sure to delete the five cache files in the Sims 3 folder:

    • CASPartCache.package
    • compositorCache.package
    • scriptCache.package
    • simCompositorCache.package
    • socialCache.package

By the way, please delete any files you see in the CurrentGame folder.  That folder should always be empty unless you currently have a save loaded.

    Thanks for your answer.

I am still trying to sort it one by one as it was last thing I wanted to do not going to lie...

I took Mod folder once again - game works.

Placed empty Mod folder with essentials for mods to work ( no mods in it) - works.

Placed my Nrass mod folder - works.

Then if I place any other mod from what I used to use before it would not load...

What needs updating in this case? I do remember something that some broken mods still can be stored in DCbackup or DCcache folders even though mods taken out of folder? But that wouldn't make sense right? Because when I take the Mod folder out game works 😞 . I am so confused right now... Also I have seen somewhere online that it may need an update because of Island paradise expansion pack? It is really thrustrating and I have tried so many things... I been playing sims for over 13 years and I've done mods before and broke game many times but this... Really do upset me as I can no longer fix it...

My second though that I may need to do the paradise expansion pack fix as stated online as it interrupts with mods? As I know for sure these mods which are in the screenshot really do work so what is causing game not to load? CC interupting with Mods for example ( downloading a sims).

I really hope something would work out... I have deleted cache files always did. I am adding a screemshot of my Mods folder. No matter what script mod I put in except Nrass and nointro nothing works...

    Big thanks again! ❤️

    Update -

Some of my old mods are working... But What happened to my other mods I used all the time with no issues? 😞

@Garage_Queen  As a test, please confirm again that the game loads with only NRaas mods, then download a fresh copy of velocitygrass's no automatic memories mod and add it to the Packages folder.  Delete scriptCache.package again and see whether the game loads.

If the new copy of the no automatic memories mod doesn't work, I think it's time to rebuild your content in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 3 folder out of Documents\Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, open the launcher to spawn a clean folder, add the Mods Framework and NRaas mods to the new folder, and test.  If everything works, add a freshly download copy of the velocitygrass mod again and test.

If you run into more trouble, please let me know what kind of install this is: Origin, disc, Steam, or something else.

DCCache and DCBackup do not contain any mods or files related to mods.  DCBackup does contain one file for each item you've installed through the launcher, but that only includes store and custom content, not mods, and the files there should have no effect on the mods themselves.  However, you can delete everything in DCBackup except for ccmerged.package if you want.  The other files are only relevant if you upload content to the Exchange and you want your cc to stick to the uploads.  The ccmerged file is necessary for premium store content to work, so leave that alone.

There's no specific update for Island Paradise; by the time that pack was released, all patches were incorporated into the base game.  There's a fixed version of IP available, but installing that (or not) has no effect on your mods.

Not sure if you have seen my previous reply as it was edited - I have uploaded a screenshot of Nrass working in the game.

I have removed everything and got a fresh framework folder. I installed those mods which worked with the old one and downloaded the new velocitygrass mod - it still not loading... I also noticed that mod works with previous game updates - 1.63/1.66/1.67. Mine is 1.69. But still, I know this mod worked before. I am using Origin.

How can I prevent this happening in the future? I had to create 4 different families in a month time and it keeps happening...
Issues starts when I download cc and then eventually launcher stops installing items which brings black small screen with  not responding message.
Launcher was not responding many times including when I tried uninstalling items. So my solution was taking the mod folder out and it has fixed the launcher but made an issue with mods instead. Guessing there is no way of saving my family . I tried saving my previous family before but then game would turn off at the very end just before family loads .

I still have hopes maybe removing all mods and saving the family with no mods and items replaced by default items would work rather than saving family with mods used? I am saying this because I have said my family with mods before and never tried saving it with default items replaced. I don't even know what to do anymore. I keep questioning myself what to do and what caused that to happen...

    I have an update...

I have renamed the whole sims 3 folder and moved mod folder to the new sims 3 folder to test mods out and it wouldn't load.

The problem is in my mod folder unless my launcher has updated somehow and that's what caused it not to run. I will keep looking through the mod folder for now until I find a solution. ☹️
