Sim is missing after completing university

My sim has just finished their first term in university and won't show up in game anymore. For some reason, all of the townies my sim has a relationship with will still show, but my sim no longer has their own thumbnail. If I try to invite the sim over using a different townie, my sim just doesn't show up either. Please help!!

  • @crauzeyy  Is this in the University world, or back at home?  If your sim traveled back home, did their thumbnail disappear when they returned or at some later point?  Do you have any backups of this save?

@puzzlezaddict Hi, sorry for the late reply.

It occurred once my sim moved back home. Immediately upon returning back to the main world, their thumbnail disappeared. Unfortunately I don't have a backup of the save either.

@crauzeyy  The game keeps a backup even if you don't, although it's just the data from the second-to-last time you saved.  Go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 > Saves, and you'll see a folder with your save name and one with the same name plus a .backup extension.  So if your save is called Sunset Valley, there will be a folder labeled Sunset Valley.sims3 and another labeled Sunset Valley.sims3.backup.  Rename the save and delete the .backup extension (e.g. Sunset Valley 1.sims3), and you'll be able to load it from the Main Menu.

However, this is only helpful if the backup is from before your sim returned from University.  If it's newer than that, there are a few approaches you could try, but there's no guarantee they'll work.  Let me know whether you use mods or would be willing to try, and either way, I'll write out some suggestions.

  • I have a similar problem! My sim finished university... then leaves and everything seems OK until she gets to her homeworld and I get the error "Missing object warning! Some objects could not be loaded or placed".

I have no CC and it's a fresh install.

  • My workaround for University glitch

When returning home to no sim showing and no money and no way to play just click "Edit Town", then click on the house your sim lived in and it will pop up a box showing your sim in that house, money and all. At the bottom of the box is  evict, merge with, merge, etc. Click the one that says "Switch to this household". You can now play and they have all their skills they learned while at Uni, all the money earned too. I played 30 minutes (offline mode on Origin, did not disconnect my wifi), saved and quit and restarted computer. Played online for a while and everything was fine.

Hope this helps someone with this glitch. May even work for traveling to China, France, etc also. I don't know because I never traveled there yet.

I have tried this and it still doesn’t work for me, it shows my lot as empty, and when I try to go back to the game it goes into setup mode. Is there any other solution?

@jaydoll99  The only other solution I know of is to revert to a prior save and try the travel transition again; hopefully it won't break this time.  If it does, there are ways to try to make it more stable; let me know if you'd be interested in using mods or would rather try the approach that doesn't involve them.
