@puzzlezaddict Hi, sorry for the late reply.
It occurred once my sim moved back home. Immediately upon returning back to the main world, their thumbnail disappeared. Unfortunately I don't have a backup of the save either.
@crauzeyy The game keeps a backup even if you don't, although it's just the data from the second-to-last time you saved. Go into Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 > Saves, and you'll see a folder with your save name and one with the same name plus a .backup extension. So if your save is called Sunset Valley, there will be a folder labeled Sunset Valley.sims3 and another labeled Sunset Valley.sims3.backup. Rename the save and delete the .backup extension (e.g. Sunset Valley 1.sims3), and you'll be able to load it from the Main Menu.
However, this is only helpful if the backup is from before your sim returned from University. If it's newer than that, there are a few approaches you could try, but there's no guarantee they'll work. Let me know whether you use mods or would be willing to try, and either way, I'll write out some suggestions.
