Sims 3 custom content files not being recognized

So I dumped Sims 4 and went back to Sims 3 and I couldn't be happier for it. It is so much more in-depth and there's so much more customization I'm really happy. However now I'm at the point where I want to put in a few hairstyles and mods and this is where I run into a problem.

After following proper directions and installing mod folder with config into the Sims 3 directory.

The game package files do not show up as package files they show up as unrecognized files as a result they don't show up in the game.

I've attached the picture of what it looks like now. Please let me know what I'm doing wrong.

I want to enjoy this game to the fullest as I am staying in this game but I do need some custom mods to make it more complete where developers failed.

Okay so update. It was working yesterday there was no intro no sparkles. And I got the default eyes to work. However after I added one of the mods that I wanted it all reversed itself and went back to the way it was. Now I can see the intro again. At this point you know I'm the kind enough person I'm not going to kill myself over something that does not work. It's called self-love and self-worth. And if this game was not designed for us to effortlessly create custom things then it's not the right game for me. I understand that other people don't feel the same way they don't feel deserving of more they feel like they have to work overtime. I'm not one of those people life is too short and I have things to do. So if this is not working I'm not going to spend another week of my time fixing something that should have been placed in the game in the first place. The developers should have created an effortless way to create and design and add custom content and they should have thought of ways to implement necessary things into the game so that the game does not have to be modded. Thank you for your help regardless it has given me some pointers. I wish you well.

  • @theopisisters  Are nointro and nobuildsparkles working?  I can see why the third file in your screenshot wouldn't show up: it's an image of some sort, not a .package file.  But anything ending in .package should load as long as the mod or cc item itself is made properly.

Additionally, have you deleted the five cache files in your Sims 3 user folder?  They should be deleted any time you add or remove content to your game, whether mods or cc or a new pack.  For reference, they are:

    • CASPartCache.package
    • compositorCache.package
    • scriptCache.package
    • simCompositorCache.package
    • socialCache.package

Thanks for response yes I just cleared the cache and repeated the process redownloaded framework. Maybe I'm missing something I'm not sure but it's still not recognizing them as package files.

@theopisisters  I'm not sure what you mean when you say the files aren't being recognized as .package files.  The first, third, and fourth files in your screenshot do show up as .package files.  Do those work, as in, nointro, nobuildsparkles, and the cc file?  The third file isn't a .package file at all; it's not a question of whether it's "recognized" as such.

Okay you see how they show up as just blank paper on the screen? When other people install them it shows up as a Sims icon. I know custom content does not show up in the game as well

@theopisisters  What other people are seeing is a file association, as in, Windows has assigned a program to open that file type by default.  It's the same as when you see an icon with little lines on it for a .txt file: that's set to open with Notepad when you double-click.  Your blank icons mean that Windows hasn't associated a program with the .package extension.  The Sims icon likely comes from S3PE, as in, Sims 3 Package Editor.

This is not why your mods and/or custom content files aren't working.  The file association has nothing to do with how Sims 3 itself reads or doesn't read the files.  I myself don't have a file type associated with .package files, and my mods all work fine; that's true for many of us.

I'll ask again:  Do nointro and nobuildsparkles work, or not?  This is important info, and I can't help you unless I know the answer.

Please bear with me I'm very new to this I used to be good at it but it's been years and last I remember back in the day this file association was different on my old computer.

So now I'm starting to remember what's what.

How do I test if those two files are working?

@theopisisters  The nointro mod eliminates the intro video you'd normally see when the game starts to load.  The nobuildsparkles mod removes the sparkles that appear briefly when you place something (e.g. a wall) in Build Mode.  If you don't see an intro or build sparkles, those mods are working.

Please also check in-game whether any other .package files are loading.  I don't know what else you have aside from what's in your screenshot, but for the fourth file at least, you should be able to see whether a sim has custom eyes available in CAS.  Check both genders and all ages.
