Sims 3 game keeps crashing when I want to start a new game

Hi, I just bought the Sims 3 starter today, but I keep getting crashes when I start a new game. I get an error that "the game stopped working" when the progress bar is around 20%. I'm running Windows...

Thanks. I set up a VMware virtual machine with Windows 7 and installed the sims 3 there. It works perfectly fine in Windows 7, so it appears like the issue lies in the Windows 8.1 preview, or in the graphics driver compatibility with Windows 8.1.

Thanks for your time! Hope the issue gets fixed though, I dont like playing games in a virtual machine.
