Sims 3 won't open in Lenovo LOQ laptop

Hi everyone,

I'm having a serious issue with The Sims 3 and I'm hoping someone can help me.

My specs:

- Lenovo LOQ laptop

- Intel Core i5 (12th or 13th gen)

- NVIDIA RTX 3050

- 16GB RAM

- Windows 11

- Game installed via EA App

The problem started when I tried to load any world (Sunset Valley, Bridgeport, etc.) and kept getting this error: "A serious error has occurred while loading [world name]. We recommend that you restart the application."

While trying to fix it, I followed some advice and enabled Windows 7 compatibility mode on the TS3.exe file. After that, the game stopped opening entirely. I have since uninstalled and reinstalled the game, and also deleted the Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3 folder, but the game still won't open at all.

I also installed DXVK (d3d9.dll) and Ultimate ASI Loader (wininet.dll) in the Bin folder, and created a dxvk.conf file with custom device settings.

Has anyone experienced this or know how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

  • matheusmarozzi  Please remove all the extra files you added to the game, or uninstall and reinstall it again.  Please also let me know whether your Documents directory is currently inside the OneDrive folder.  This is the usual cause for the "serious error" message.  How to move it is covered here:

The guide was written with Sims 4 in mind but applies equally to Sims 3.

If you still can't play with your Documents folder out of OneDrive and with every mod and utility removed, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.
