What exactly are badges?
I get that you can unlock them by doing certain things, but do they automatically sync to your profile online? And is there a way to view them in game in order to check them off? What exactly is the point of them...?

you can check your badges in your the sims 3 page and if your online ingame click the three dots open player wall then in the i think it's the second tab you can see your badges too locked and unlocked
edit to add depending on which pack you have i have island paradsie my sim got married to a ermaid and the first baby born is a mer the badge i unlocked is the 7th one in the list another one is locked which is run a five star resort for x amount of days in a row
once i do that the badge should unlock and appear in my badges on my badges page in the bages page on the sims 3 site if you hover the mouse over the locked badge it'll tell you what it is for and what you need to do to unlock it for example find x amount of messages in bottles
