Yay! I'm glad you're starting one because I've honestly had a blast with mine! I've played the same world since the game came out, back when there weren't any pools. My game has been going for 11 IRL years.
I didn't think of it as a "forever world" when I started it, I just liked seeing how the towns changed over time and didn't like losing lots I built. I spend a lot of my time in Build Mode changing the lots and at some point I decided I wanted to remake every lot in-game as my own thing. I have a whole notebook/checklist of what lot-types I want to add in what neighborhood. So that has been the main goal of this world.
I don't own every pack, so, so far I have:
4/14 neighborhoods complete.
6/14 neighborhoods 90% there (1 to 2 lots left to re-create)
4/14 neighborhoods that still need work.
After my first family just trying out the game in this world. I decided to start a Legacy in the same world that's run for the past 11 IRL years that has had many, many twists and turns. I started with my simself and my brother's simself as a household. After my simself lost her one-true-love to the Great Culling, she practically snuffed any other love attempt and I almost lost the legacy challenge. After a huge and difficult effort; I finally managed to marry her to Malcolm Landgraab.
<Their kid popped out of their crib with cheese hair and was purely evil. But we can circle back to that later.>
After that, to prevent future cullings I decided I needed to 'own' the romance-able partner's household. So I started a rule that for each generation I would make a new household, create two sims based on any two people or characters that I liked in CAS, start them married and have them try for baby. Their baby would grow up alongside mine. Whoever that baby grew up to be was the destined partner of my Legacy's heir.
So it's basically a huge gene experiment smooshing together everything I like.
For my brother's side. He married a random townie who was an astronaut and died at work, leaving behind just their daughter. For his legacy, Story progressions weren't a thing back then. I had to create each notable townie's generation manually by hand (Goths, Pancakes, Munch, etc.). To consolidate my own work, I've been marrying those generations into his descendants.
So his line basically a mix of a lot of like-able townies.
I also manually kept up any legacy relatives that were once family; so they didn't die out. At least one sibling from each generation left behind a family branch. Today, I still manage about fourteen households. However, Story Progression has been a godsend for me! It has taken off a lot of work!
I played with long-lifespan on, spent a lot of time in build mode, so despite the world having about 7000+ hours; I am on my 10th generation of the Legacy. Here's some notable households:
Legacy Gen 9&10 is my Main save.
(Gen 9) Azure has had a rough life. Basically busked the streets penniless as a teenager, but that love for music eventually rose her to superstardom-and she now lives in a cushy mansion. She recently lost her husband to electrocution, and is left with their three teenagers. While I stepped away for a bit, story progression had them adopt two horses, and she had two kids with an old Ex despite being days away from an Elder! But by my rules; only the three teenagers are eligible heirs. But it'll be fun figuring out the whole baby situation.
Legacy 9 Siblings are Siblings of Azure. A bit of history for this one. My third generation was a Vampire Hunter who nearly wiped out all the vampires in my world. Straud has been long dead in this world. The Vampire Hunter was eventually killed herself by the last, now infamous vampire family, the Ikedas. 6 generations later, the son of that evil vampire started a fling with the sister of my household. She has had two kids by him. The eldest of which, the redhead toddler she's holding, is a vampire. They currently live in the Goth's old residence and the thought of an evil vampire grandson taking over the Goths Residence has me pretty excited!
The two men are Azure's brother (in the hat) and his husband, the politician. Who are great uncles.
Fang: Legacy Gen4 was the daughter of the Vampire Hunter's cousin. (Not technically part of my legacy) Back in the age of vampires; the cousin had triplets with a vampire, surname Fang. One of the triplets was a vampire, but her mother had her keep a very low profile as a child, so she was not slain. She has survived 6 generations by flying under the radar. She was one of three vampires that survived the Vampire purge --and is the only Good Vampire of my world. She does not like to partake in Sim's plasma.
Legacy 9 Cousins Generation 8 had three spellcasting sisters who were plagued by so many misfortunes. So much death happened around them, it was insane. The unluckiest sisters who've ever lived!
While one of those sisters was heavily pregnant she got invited out to some ancient ruins and went into labor there--and who stopped her from leaving the lot? The ghost of the most evil vampire who has ever lived in my game. The founder of the evil vampire society. The ghost of a sim I long-thought dead and deleted from my save file! Oh the nostalgia. Finding a sim there like that, I knew I couldn't just leave the lot never to see her again and the sister was a spellcaster... So I played out a whole roleplay scenario where, under duress, the spellcaster wished the vampire back to life with a wishing well at the ruins. The catch was I aged the vampire down to a baby and added her as a daughter to the spellcaster with a cheat. "Born again" alongside my spellcaster's daughter.
The spellcaster went on to die young just like her sister, and her 'two' infant daughters moved in with the last spellcasting sister, who had also adopted the orphaned nephew of the third sister who also died young. Then, the adopting sister and her teenage daughter died young. Leaving behind two child orphans and the born-again vampire who mysteriously isn't aging at the same rate as her twin sister.
(I think the vampire got glitched out and isn't aging properly. Which is hilarious. I'm keeping that glitch. Get stuck in a toddler's body you evil bloodsucker!)
Lynx: Bro&Townie Decendants My brother's simself's family line! This is also a mixture of many popular townies from each expansion and I believe they adopted the family name of that crazy-cat lady from the Cats&Dogs expansion. I had kept the Goths alive as a separate family for a long time and only recently consolidated them into my brother's lineage.
Legacy 2Gen This was my simself and Malcolm Landgraab's daughter! The baby who popped out of the crib with cheese hair and was pure evil! Though light-evil compared to the vampires. She was more of a prankster evil. A stand in front of the bathroom so you pee yourself kind of evil. She was a hilarious sim to play and had so much personality. My favorite sim of all time! When it came time for her to die of old-age, she found a way to cheat death back when sims did not have that kind of autonomy! I made her a playable ghost out of necessity--not out of free will! She would not die.
I've kept her ghost around and if I ever run out of things-I-like to blend into my legacy generations, I plan to bring her back to life then and play her again.
Sorry if that was more of an info-dump than you were interested in or willing to read! I hope you have just as much fun watching your world grow and expand--and growing LORE in your world out of pure happenstance is a type of fun I can't quite explain. The one advice I can give is, if you run into a glitch, as the sims is a glitchy game, just roll with it! Make it into an event.

keenow The Great Culling...bwahaha!
I'm amazed at what you've accomplished! I'm waiting for my game to be for sure fixed before moving on and I've got a trip I have to go on for a wedding.
Your world is just incredible! Wow...the dedication!
I'm considering doing a long term Lepacy where I add in one pack at a time, but not in any date release order, just one focus pack at a time. I'm starting with the base game, where Travis Scott and Liberty got married and had twins. As long as that save isn't corrupt, I'll continue with them, but since I just began, if it is I might start fresh.
How have you gone 11 years without a corrupt game?? How do you move on when things go wrong...I start over at the drop of a hat and I'm really challenging myself to stick with the next 5000 hours.
