I have a question about all these challenges I see all over the place...

Are there any rewards at the end of them or is just a fun gameplay strategy to keep you playing the game? 

If it's a challenge created by the simmers, there's no reward, just a game play strategy like you said. It if it's one of the scenarios that you can select in the game, those have rewards.
