The Merfolk of the Sulani Seas

Overtime, I'll add to this post to expand the Table of Contents and make it easier to access the chapters.

Table of Contents

Use the links in the Table of Contents to read the chapters in order. The links are working and will take you straight to a chapter. This should save people the trouble of scrolling through the thread.

Eventually, I plan on trying to put the "Meet the MerSims" Section in the comments of this thread along with the chapters. I am adding links to each of my posts to help with navigation.

The Little Merman Arc

Chapter 1: The Shadow of the Sea Witches

Chapter 2: Swimming to Zalia Grottos

Chapter 3: Life's Full of Tough Choices

Chapter 4: A Change in the Tides

Chapter 5: The Embers of Love

Merfolk of the Sulani Seas Lore

Links to threads that include details concerning the structure of how my merfolk society in the sims is organized, their culture, and background exposition.  Tags for the updates will appear next to the links.

SimLit Tips in the New Forums

One of the things I noticed when the new forums were created was that not everything transferred here looking the way it was supposed to. I opted out of having my story transferred for me and took a great deal of time working through a lot of troubleshooting to find the easiest way to share longer posts.

In the comments of this thread, I had a great deal of help from the community as I worked on transferring chapters from Answers HQ. Now that the transfer to the new forums is complete, I think I found the best way to get around the Forums tendency to Auto-Refresh the webpage and erase all progress instead of saving it.

My suggestion is in the following link. I will update it with any other findings and suggestions can be shared there so everyone can benefit from them. It's possible this has been fixed while I was away, but I think this suggestion can still be helpful.

SimLit Posting Suggestion after Troubleshooting

With the list of merfolk in my story expanding over time, I wanted to set aside a space for the character profiles involving the merfolk in my story.

Character Profiles will be organized around the Family Groups, or pods, my merfolk belong in. Check out the linked thread to stay updated on the Merfolk Pods in all my stories.

I haven't. I started updating the story here only, but the way screenshots are loading and the visual changes to sims have me considering a reboot or redoing scenes to make some of this look consistent. It's possible that I will return to my blog if I can't fix the way screenshots look. Updating old screenshots is something I already decided on at the very least.

Weirdest part is that the dimensions of the screenshots are largely the same. They just appear to be different sizes for some reason. They were not uploaded like this.

    Another Chapter Update:

The draft of the next chapter is finished, and I am currently working on building the scene for my next chapter. The visual bugs that have changed the appearance of child sims has resulted in a key decision being made for me. If I can't make the child sims look as intended before May, it's possible that I will be changing my approach to MerMay. I have 5 chapters already posted and the screenshots look like a mess in the forums. Additionally, the way my sims look in the screenshots are no longer consistent. I'm considering the possibility that I will need to redo screenshots in chapters throughout May and do something like a story refresh.

For me, the visual changes to my sims are too drastic for me. If it was just an old screenshot I wish I did differently, I wouldn't do this. But what's actually happening is a substantial change to my sims' appearance and weird changes in screenshot sizes that I feel is immersion braking.

While I do not think the text needs to be changed, I might use this as an opportunity to update things I catch in the chapters. Going backwards is the one thing I didn't want to do, but moving forward, there are simply too many visual changes for me to ignore now. If I'm going to try and make the screenshots in the forums look as intended again by reuploading them, I might as well go all the way with changes to the scenes. I don't want my characters to suddenly look so different halfway through the story.

I try to keep the mods I use to the absolute minimum because of this very situation. It's inconvenient, but I want to see this as an opportunity rather than a setback. My game isn't broken, and I can play it like this. I just don't feel good about continuing the story with visual inconsistencies. The illustrations are supposed to be a big part of SimLit, and I want readers to have consistent illustrations in visuals and appearance in the forums.

I hope everything works out the way I hope it does. Best case scenario is that I won't have to redo anything. Worst case scenario, my story gets a visual refresh with text updates that make the chapters better with fewer exposition and more meaningful content.

  • Do to updates to the game, changes in the forums resulting in the potential need to reupload screenshots, the amount of time I haven't been able to spend in game, and the length of time between chapters, I've decided that it would be better to reset my story.

Additionally, I look back and feel like a lot of things just don't reflect the way I want this story to start and the save I'm using has actually gotten fairly old. This save for this story is actually 2 or 3 years old and has been through multiple game updates. Certain things I've done in this save were accomplished by glitching things that weren't intended, hence the inconsistencies manifesting with the patches fixing these bugs. I've been looking over so much to get back into things and I'm starting to see that this might be my best option moving forward.

Most importantly, the biggest reason I've made this decision is because I accomplished some things by glitching not just the game, but the mods I was using.

One major advantage of a reset with a new save is that things moving forward should have a longer life, sims won't suddenly look different, and I now have access to more extremely useful mods and have developed more familiarity with using these mods. I will also be able to make another attempt at staying more consistent with my story.

Because finishing this story is important to me, I will endeavor to do everything I can to make this worthwhile. I will kick start things in May for MerMay 2025. I've put together enough stuff that trying to prepare for this.

Wow, I am loving this. I had no idea people make stories in the forum. This has been very enjoyable and I can't wait to read the rest. Thank you!
