Erratic sims shouldn't have the Straight Jacket Icon even for their moodlets

Hello everyone,

I noticed that even if the team changed the straight Jacket Icon for erratic sims in CAS, they kept that same icon for their mood changes...as someone who is neurodivergent, extreme mood changes happen all the time for me but the fact that it's associated with "the need" of straight jackets in the game makes me feel so bad? I don't know how to explain it but it feels like people who have mood changes needs to be contained.

Maybe the team could change these icons: Here's an example of what my erratic sim got from switching to a sad moodlet

  • Erratic trait internally is called Insane (like in Sims 3). Honestly, I think these should be two different traits. Like in Sims 3 there was Neurotic and Insane, I felt that worked. You can be neurotic without being insane.

If I remember rightly the trait was originally insane but was changed to erratic due to the stigma associated with mental health issues.

I understand that, but as someone with serious mental health issues (and actually hospitalized over it—so a top candidate for being a possible offended party). I understand insane is an outdate term, and hardly refer to it as offensive.  "Psycho" (any bf that calls their gf this is about to regret it) or "erratic" (less hurtful but gaslighting) is far more offensive in tone and in rudeness, if someone called me either of these in real life, I'd be insulted, where as the term "are you insane?" can be mused as a person who likes very spicy food/is an adrenaline junky, and no one tends to be hurt emotionally.

It is also used in a game (and is used in story telling) as a stereotype—such as pirates (as no modern day pirates even come close to the stereotyped theme "Pirates" and even era pirates are hardly accurate, it is clearly fantasy/story inspired).

The term insane/mad is really more story and fictional themes these days, IMHO, unless this is the vernacular to offend those with mental health issues regionally. But to me insane, mad/madness or certifiable are just so old, and generalized terms they hold no weight to offense. I honestly, only used Insane in Sims 3 for my Alice in Wonderland themed Sims as the trait was the most apt, and did not offend me as a person living with mental health issues.

I thought erratic was an odd choice for a replacement name, I admit, but I don't doubt that the good intentions were there.

Yes, I know there is an effort of inclusion, diversity and non-offensive/attempts of political correct terms. I just sometimes think that being "PC" can be counter productive in some cases—such as this case.

  • I just touched base on this in a previous post of mine about traits and I mentioned erratic traits and how it’s definitely due for an update !

  • The fact that they changed the original name of the trait was more insulting, but that is strictly my own personal opinion. They changed it because some people were offended, at least that was the impression I was given at that time. The icon is meaningless, since the trait was not orginally meant to represent what some people refer to as nerodiveginent.

It was meant to be a playful way to simulate someone who hears voices/talks to their different personalities like those are actual people. That is what those erratic emotional states usually represent. They don't really represent extreme mood changes, especially since the emotional states are way too easy to manipulate in-game. Btw, as a neuro-spicy person myself, the icon isn't a bother. It is just a silly picture that shows the emotional state is due to the trait rather than something like being in a "well decorated" environment.

I believe this is the case. I sometimes do not understand when people want Sims to be more like real life (adding mods that give Sims a mensural cycle and other real life issues that are usually beyond the Teen rating).

This is, IMHO, is not about having accurate representation of those with mental health issues—I wouldn't want a game to accurately "attempt" to represent that. I think it isn't meant—on purpose—to represent anyone.

But if I was to make a type-casted or stereotyped character like the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, etc. I'd not only want, but would need a trait like Insane for immersion. Straight-jackets I think are really only used in movies and series for fiction/fantasy storytelling, and are rarely even used in modern medicine anymore.
