The laptop mode setting is for computers that ARE NOT intended for gaming. I have a gaming laptop, so don't use the laptop mode setting. my laptop exceeds the low specs needed for the game. I also do not get major FPS drops as you suggest happens. I saw you are mentioned a Mac, which isn't really meant for gaming. I know some people love Apple products for certain programs I will never use, but my current laptop cost less than a MAC. You can get a gaming laptop that will meet the game's low specs for $500 or less.
