Rework the Goofball trait to prefer "funny" interactions

We don't seem to really have a proper "funny" trait since "Goofball" seems to heavily prioritize mischief instead. Kind of a massive empty niche, IMO. Now that we have some really good candidates for a proper "mischievous" trait (Grouch from the Cozy Celebrations event, and most recently Disruptive from EBN from what I've heard), could we please rework Goofballs to be more interested in telling jokes and generally silly behavior? We are sorely in need of a trait for the lovable goofy Sims who just want to make other people smile and laugh with them. Likeable silly people, not dreaded pranksters who destroy their own friendships all the time. Right now, "mischief" interactions seem less about laughing together and more about laughing at others' expense, sometimes in a way that's outright cruel

The version of Lazlo Curious in my main Sims 4 save would thank you. As would his family, who constantly has to put up with his antics. 😅 Unless I'm mistaken, the original Lazlo from TS2 was anything but mean-spirited. I'd love so much to be able to capture his original good-natured playfulness in this game too. For now, I think the best I can do is swap out his "Goofball" trait for "Childish". Honestly that could work for him specifically, but still, not the same thing. Silly people without a childish streak are still totally left out right now

Some points and ideas for this revamped Goofball trait-

  • They could roll wants to do things like telling jokes, telling funny/outrageous stories, making silly faces, practicing comedy, etc.
  • They could have constant access to certain interactions that are normally only available to Sims who are feeling playful, regardless of the Goofball's current mood: things like "flash crazy eyes", playing in the bath, jumping in puddles, and so on
  • They could also have a rather small chance to do the "playful" animations whenever they're in any positive mood, like using a book as a puppet and making it "talk" while reading it. In this case, the chance of the animation playing would be lower than it would be for a Sim in the Playful mood
  • Perhaps give them the option to "skip here", like Playful Sims in TS2?
  • An exclusive extra dance interaction could be a lot of fun. It could perhaps be called something like "Dance Like a Fool", and would involve the Sim doing a lot of extremely animated, over-the-top comical dance moves
  • They could also have some additional exclusive interactions with objects, giving them the option to play with them in a silly fashion (similar to the aforementioned animation where a Sim will play with a book)

  • This is not a traits fault really (I mean slightly, yeah, sure), but it is really the Mischief skill interactions. Any trait can autonomously use certain/if not all Mischief skill interactions.  And only some traits have a preference to be more inclined or less inclined to do them.

    Like a Mean/Evil Sim has "8" priority to scare another Sim, Insane = 6, Child/Teen/Goofball = 3, Childish = 2, Proper = -6, Good = -10. The rest are pretty much like neutral/0.

    Relationship matters like if Enemy = 3, Disliked/Despised = 5,  Various Romantic = -3, etc.

    Mood plays a part too, Playful = 5, Confident = 4, Angry = 3, etc.

But IHMO, yes, all actions such as Mischief should be better target for only certain traits or those who like Mischief! Utilizing whitelisting and blacklisting (an internal file tuning filter) certain traits (like/dislike are internally regarded as traits) from using these interactions.

TLDR: Yes, they need to do some reworking!

Thanks for delving into the technical aspects of things there; it's helpful to know these things when coming up with possible solutions

So if I'm understanding that correctly, the final priority for an interaction is calculated by adding up all the bonuses and penalties? Because if that's what's going on, I think the Goofball's Mischief obsession might in part have something to do with them being playful a lot. For that particular example you gave, a playful Goofball with no other factors would end up with a priority of 8, on par with the Mean and Evil Sims. Presumably even worse if the Sim happens to be a child or teen (literally turned up to 11 in that case)

I have seen lots of Sims autonomously use the interactions, even Bella Goth on occasion, which is amusing in a random weird way. But the Goofball Sims I've seen seem totally obsessed, like they can't get through a conversation without inevitably resorting to mischief and making everything awkward. Not counting any other life states' special ones, their favorite Mischief interactions in my experience seem to be mainly "scare", "lie about career", "ask due date" on non-pregnant Sims, "start preposterous rumor", and sometimes "noxious cloud". Sometimes they'll continue with the Mischief even when they've already become embarrassed and dig themselves even deeper. </3 Not sure what's going on there

Anyway, if they could find a way to give the priority bonuses more nuance, that would be great. Like make the moods affect priorities differently for certain traits. For Goofballs, I would imagine their Mischief interaction priorities could be set mostly to 0 by default, if not all of them. Funny interactions on the other hand could be set on average to whatever priority they have most Mischief interactions set to currently in the live game. If they're feeling playful, they could get a small boost to some Mischief interactions' priorities, but a much bigger boost to Funny interactions, so they're much more common. Playful Goofballs would become massive hams, as they deserve to be. Angry Goofballs, however, could be more prone to Mischief interactions, particularly the more "mean-spirited" ones

On the other hand, you could have things like Evil Sims with the Playful mood getting a tiny boost to Funny priorities, but a huge boost to Mischief priorities, especially ones like "scare" or "describe apocalypse"

Sidenote, I find it odd that confident of all moods is giving a priority bonus there. Going on a pranking (or scaring) rampage just because one is feeling confident sounds kind of random for Sims without a blatantly "malicious" or "mischievous" kind of trait

  • This would be great! I think also connecting the Goofball trait more to the Playful personality of the Sims and Sims 2 would be great like preferring jokes, playing in bathtubs, and skipping around.

Yes, the confident bonus to use the scare interaction surprised me too. I think Playful mood is the biggest culprit TBH.

As a test I tried to make Proper Sims have -100 priority on the Mischief social interactions I could find (because my game my 2 "Propers" were spam learning/using these social interactions, usually from lying about career). But some how one, who I think was in a playful mood (caused by Moody Shrub), still managed a Mischief skill up (unless it was from an interaction I missed to update, but I missed what she actually did).

I am going to try to see if I could ween at least Proper/Good/Mystical/Dislikes Mischief Sims away from doing Mischief autonomously as a file tuning project. See if I can stop at least those from autonomously doing these interactions.

Fun fact both Mystical and Disruptive (regarded as Rogue in the internal files), were not given a trait priority at all (so mood/relationship/etc. would in theory determine use?), they aren't even on the list. So I added them as a Disruptive Sim would be more more inclined to do these social interactions, and I assume a Mystical wouldn't be as they are about helping/balancing other Sims.

Agreed. Seems as though the interactions of the current "Goofball" trait would be better renamed as, and fits the definition of, "Obnoxious". The term "Goofball" is defined as "a silly person", therefore this trait would better align with Sims performing Funny interactions instead of Mischief.

I wouldn't mind having both traits available in a future base game update: A mischievous "Obnoxious" trait and a funny "Goofball" trait.

Yessss that's precisely what I had in mind! I haven't played it yet myself, but I have watched my sister's Sims 2 gameplay, and the Playful Sims there seem like really lighthearted fun people. It's adorable and we have pretty much nothing like it here

Which reminds me, here in TS4, Sims normally only have the option to "play in the bath" when they're in the Playful emotion, right? Let's have Goofballs be able to do that and some other Playful-mood-exclusive interactions at all times, regardless of their current mood :D

That's really strange about Disruptive Sims; they definitely should be pushed by the game towards using Mischief IMO. It sounds like the perfect trait to be specializing in doing annoying pranks and whatnot

Having both traits exist is another idea that popped into my head too! I wasn't sure about it since both Grouch and Disruptive exist now, but if there's room for another trait specifically about the Mischief skill and maybe pranks in particular, then that would be perfect. "Obnoxious", "Mischievous", or "Prankster" could all be good names for the new trait. I definitely agree that the kind of person who comes to my mind at the word "Goofball" is a very likeable kind of person, someone who does really silly things for laughs and probably has a wacky sense of humor

  • Agreed that at least in my mind, Goofball as a trait implies humor more than mischief. This trait seems like it would be better suited to funny interactions, and if it's not possible to change the existing trait, perhaps a new one (Comedian? etc.) could be created to serve this purpose.

    Prankster

I like your suggestion of "Prankster" to rename Goofball. Sounds nicer and more accurate than my "Obnoxious" suggestion. 😉 Hope to see this trait renamed, along with a proper "Goofball" silly trait added to base game someday.
