Why even bother with university?
I finally gave it a shot after owning the expansion quite a while. There's interesting new jobs and content in that pack, but the actual university is not it. First of all, the problem with sims 3 ...

I enjoy university. Works much better though if you setup your own club as a fraternity or sorority and do extra events yourself. Also setting up the game world helps tremendously. One of my major projects was creating a Library and updating it so it's a major place for my sims to go when studying which also allows them to meet the Brainiac club etc.
It does need a bit of love and I would update the lots with pack expansion to make it more interesting.
I also now have a rental with a bunch of students living off campus in apartments and that has been a lot of fun as I test the apartments out. So far it has been great as it mixes up apartment events, going to college and having frat parties through the club option.
Like a lot of things with the Sims it is sort of what you make it. By itself University is okay but it plays much better by having other packs that support it and updating regions where students gather. It could use a bit more content though from the Sims team to make the campus itself more interesting and chaotic.
