B button won’t work in build mode after clicking an item

When I go into build mode on the Sims 4 and click on an item to place it, if I decide I no longer want to place the item and click B to go back, it doesn’t work. I thought it was my controller at first, but the B button works any other time I try and click it except for then. I’ve tried restarting my xbox, restarting the Sims and restarting my controller but nothing has worked. Any advice?

  • OwlAub10 I've noticed this recently on Xbox Series X too.

I updated my controller and cleared my locally saved data but it's still happening. I've got a problem with hand pain and it's been really aggravating for me actually. But what I've found is that sometimes it's taking as many as 6 to 10 times to get B to work. It does eventually work for me but I have to keep tapping it. It's much worse when using Debug I find. I was looking through the debug catalogue and selected one item that was enormous, I just wanted to look at it but it blocked my entire build and I was frantically tapping B to let go of it! It did work finally thank goodness. I think it started around the time we received the anniversary HBD items. If I'm using the MOO cheat I end up placing the item if I can and just deleting it.

The only advice I can give is to keep tapping the B button, pausing after each tap. It should eventually work and let go of the item.

simsplayer818 I’m so glad i’m not the only one, it’s really frustrating and so weird. Sometimes the button will work, sometimes it doesn’t work at all, and other times, like you said, it works after a couple taps. What I found as a good solution for when B doesn’t work at all, is I click the Toggle Cursor button, and that lets go of the item. Unfortunately it also exits you out of the item menu you were in, so you have to go back into it each time. But it’s faster than spam clicking B for 30 minutes, so that’s what i’ve settled for. I don’t know if that will help you at all, but I hope it does especially if your hand is hurting.

  • Thanks OwlAub10 I've trawled through old reports to see if I could find anything similar and found a solved tech post from 3 years ago with the following tips from EA. I haven't tested this yet myself except for the replacement batteries and updating the controller. It says to powercycle the console too, which I have already done.

🔹Replace the batteries in your controller

    🔹Manually power-cycle your controller

🔹Connect your controller to your Xbox using a USB cable

🔹Check for a firmware update on your controller

🔹Restore your controller's button mapping settings to default-

🔹Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

🔹Under Profile & system, select Settings.

🔹Under Devices & connections, select Accessories.

🔹On the Xbox Wireless Controller screen, select Configure.

🔹Select Restore to default to set the controller back to its original button mapping.

I too am having the same issue and for the love of everything I have no idea what it is.
I don’t have every pack, I have probably a good 55% of every type of content you can buy. I play on my Xbox series X, have had the Sims 4 on my console for a little over a year.

Everytime I build I use the bb.moveobjects, I sometimes use bb.showhiddenobjects. I recently discovered the secret pie menu and I have no idea if maybe it’s me using debug options that is causing it but I sooner ruled out the issue. The reason being it is happening in multiple saves (New games) I’ve made  to test the build/buy mode glitching in my main played save. I haven’t used any debug in my new saves. I’ve been searching for this thread for months.

I am the kind of person to out rule every single issue when it comes to disfunction, but every thread I’ve found (before now) hasn’t been very helpful or specific to what I’m experiencing.
This is what I do know:

    • I haven’t had any issues before I purchased and installed the pre-order Businesses and Hobbies pack a few days after its initial release.
    • I have reset my console as suggested by EA’s responses to other threads. Still no fix.
    • I have checked my batteries to my remote countless times as EA suggested (I also use rechargeable batteries so they're constantly charged)
    • I have attempted to reset my remote’s default mapping as suggested by EA, but it’s already set as default.
    • I have checked (and updated) my remote controller countless times as suggested by EA. Still not the issue.
    • I’ve cleared my local data and re-synced the data from the cloud but it didn’t help.
    • I can try to use a wired remote but my wireless was working perfectly fine with build/buy mode before I installed the B&H expansion pack.
    • As a last ditch resort (Also suggested by EA) I spent a total of 6 hours reinstalling Sims 4 + all 26 add-ons to my console and still no fix.

No other game I have nor functionality I use for my B button is malfunctioned on my console or controller. It works in every other aspect of The Sims 4 except for build/buy mode. It is outrageously frustrating. I can’t use it at all in build/buy mode. I have to return to free range cursor and back to reselect the item menus  and I have to re-scroll through everything back down to where I originally was. It’s irritated me so much I’ve completely ditched playing it since. I’m a very creative decorator/sim maker.
Even my CAS is glitched, I can’t trigger the clothing menu or the Face/Hair/Hat/Accessory/Makeup menu. It will latch onto my Sims head and stretch it extremely big and does the same to the body when trying to get to the clothes. I can eventually trigger the CAS menus by clicking 10+ times but after the fact my sims build is completely different.

to say the least, I’m over it. It’s truly disappointing because there is nothing that I can do to fix it. I’ve tried everything suggested by EA in the other threads, most being 3+ years old and I cannot find one that is recent enough with a response from them. I don’t have the newer expansion packs (as in the last 3-4 released) other than B&H. I haven’t had an issue until I installed it, or at least that is the main conclusion I’ve made. I’ve been waiting to see if it’s a known bug and has gotten fixed, but my game updated a few days ago and it’s still not working.
so so so so so so so saddened my game is ruined.

This must be the most confusing and frustrating bug i’ve ever encountered. It still hasn’t fixed for me and although it doesn’t seem like a big deal, it is sooo annoying. One thing I will say is I don’t have the B&H pack but I do know I didn’t have this issue until after I bought either Growing Together or City Living, so I’m thinking this bug definitely has something to do with the newer packs. I’ve also tried almost all of the things you tried with also no results. This bug definitely has caused me to stop playing for long periods of time because of how frustrating it is, which is honestly so disappointing because i’ve spent a lot of time and money on this game and honestly was pretty passionate about it. I really hope they fix this bug because I know for sure it’s not my controller and I miss playing a lot. I’m so happy to know there’s others out there dealing with this same problem because being alone on it was not fun. I hope we can bring more awareness to this bug to get it fixed.
