Bookends no longer working?

It seems my sims can no longer access books from bookends. When I select the option to read a book, they say they cannot reach the bookends. I have moved the bookends in many places without success. When I place a bookcase in the same spots, my sims can access them. I wonder if the feature was broken with the update or the new pack..Anyone else experienced the same issue?
