CAS and Build not clickable

Product: The Sims 4
Platform: PC
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Ongoing
What is your current game version number? 1.109.185.1030
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? All
Steps: When loading into CAS via new game or create-a-sim, or going into Build Mode.
What happens when the bug occurs? When entering CAS via new game, create-a-sim, edit family, I cannot click on a sim. Cannot alter their clothing or appearance. When in Build Mode, I cannot click any object or edit anything at all. Instead, will receive the message: "Cannot place item outside lot boundary".
What do you expect to see? For it to function as normal.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Yes
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? After the most recent patch.

Background:

After the most recent update things were working fine for several days. A day ago, suddenly I found many things would not work. When I tried to create a Sim or click new game, I could not alter the Sim or even choose their clothing. In Build Mode, nothing is clickable. I can still access the gallery, but that is all.

I deleted all custom content and mods, and disabled them via the menu also. This did not help. I then tried to repair the game file and delete the localthumbcache.package file, and this also did not help. As a last resort, I deleted the game entirely, reinstalled clean and tried to start a new game and I'm still facing the same issue. Not sure what could still be triggering this with no mods installed?

Edit: now cannot click on anything in Live Mode either. Cannot click on other Sims or objects and interact with them. Game has essentially become unplayable.

  • Try the following

    • Close the game
    • Rename Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4 to Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4_Old
    • Repair the game
    • Start the game. All your content will be gone now as the game created a new folder. All your saves/.. is still in the old folder so not to worry. Be aware that your claimed event rewards will also be gone for the time being but you will get them back with your other things.
    • Start a new save game
    • Check if you still have the error
    • Report back with your results for further steps on how to get your stuff back.

@littlewolfism I am so sorry to hear you are having issues with your game. Ever since the latest update, and now too with the new Grimmy event....some are reporting custom content and Mods are broken. While others who do not use mods are not able to access or get into their games at all. Some are saying their saved games are missing.

crinrict is really good at helping people with these situations. So hang on for a bit.

Just wanted you to know you are not alone with these current issues and you are at least being acknowledged.

In the meantime, to help crinrict or others who are able to help with this situation could you please post your dxdiag for us to further assist you?

Also, out of curiosity, would you by any chance have a "Last Exception" file located in your Sims 4 folder? If you see one, could you include that as well.

  • Hey guys,

Thanks for the responses. In my impatience, I ended up taking the saves/tray folder etc. and moving the whole thing to my desktop while I deleted and reinstalled. With this 'proper' clean install my problems are all gone and everything seems to be working fine again. I'm now just reluctant to try and restore old saves or my tray folder for fear that it will break my game again...
