@simsplayer818 I still cant figure out how to get the 6 hours buff from ponder chess moves, playing chess and research gardening. Perhaps you could test those as well.
@Aceeee82 I didn't get it from Research when gardening or from Ponder Moves with chess either if those actions were done in isolation when testing. But I found that the most effective thing to do was stack focused actions one after the other to maintain focus for an entire day and return home from work still focused and stay that way until late at night.
My Sim has the Perfectionist and Genius Traits. I got her to start the day with a Citrus Bath while burning Sharpening Saffron on the Spa Day incense burner, then I got her to Smell the Aroma on the incense before heading to the kitchen where she had Pitch Black Tea with another incense burner nearby burning Sharpening Saffron. Everything she did after that boosted her focus. When she went to work (she's a food critic) I chose Write Reviews which gives a focused buff too. So she arrived home very focused and importantly she still had the Citrus Bath moodlet from the morning. When she did Ponder Moves on the chessboard it then boosted her focus again. She was focused till very late evening but it switched to Happy after taking care of her cats (I kept ignoring them while testing lol and they were trying to run away from home). I tested using Make Connections too at work and got the same result.
I tested it a few times and got the same results. When I tried it with just 1 of the Focused actions on it's own it didn't last. I'm adding images to show you how it went. I was testing it without focussing decor because that's only effective when it's nearby whereas the focussing incense gives a lasting buff.

@simsplayer818 i've managed to duplicate it. i suspect it has something to do with the botanist aspiration being completed since both did. as for the chess i'm not sure but they both completed all the knowledge aspirations. so 3 actions with 6 hours moodlet thats pretty cool!

I often start out with Knowledge Aspirations to give a Sim the Quick Learner Trait. I can't get my Sims to get Focused from the Research plant at all but that Citrus Bath has been the most useful one for me. They also started a few fires with the Sharpening Saffron incense!
I revisited some Techie/Gaming Sims to keep testing how long I can get that Citrus bath Focused moodlet to stay with them. I found Active Sims find it harder to maintain Focus because the Energised buff keeps overriding everything. So a Sims personality is a factor too especially as it evolves with all the additional traits allowed with Growing Together.
I usually use the Inspired buff more than the Focused one so it's not something I'd tested in great detail. But it's been really interesting! - 2 years ago
@simsplayer818 not research plant, research gardening via the computer. it becomes available at gardening level 2.
- simsplayer8182 years agoHero@Aceeee82 Ah I see thanks for clarifying. I thought you meant the Research you do when you're actually gardening.
I'll test the other action too for my focused Sims as I hadn't tested that one. - 2 years ago
@simsplayer818 well the botanist aspiration has nothing to do with it. I have a sim with that aspiration but without any of the knowledge aspirations and she got only 4 hours. Ill have her complete some knowledge aspirations and test.

@simsplayer818 it seems that browsing simpedia and viewing focused work also get the bonus.
I also totally forgot about the perfectionist trait which grants 12 hours of +2 focused moodlet after creating a masterpiece.
- simsplayer8182 years agoHero@Aceeee82 Yes I use the focused work to display around desks. The Mathematical diagrams are a good one for that. I get artist Sims to produce a few of those to sell in stores so other Sims can buy them. Same with the Space Prints, etc.

@simsplayer818 I did it!
Both my scientist and detective sims go to work with a +7 focused moodlet that lasts 6 hours, and get a raise every day!Unfortunately my doctor sim (who is a female - the others are males) gets the moodlets for only 4 hours.
She completed all of the knowledge aspirations plus the freelance botanist.
How the heck can I get her to have that bonus too? augh! so frustrating. - simsplayer8182 years agoHero@Aceeee82 Well done! I can picture your Sims now exhausted with ice packs on their heads after all that hard work!
Sims with the new Practice Makes Perfect Trait from the Happy at Home login event also tend to be focused. I've been in build mode this week and the Science Lair lot trait also focuses Sims. If you have Snowy Escape and have Lifestyles there's the Workaholic lifestyle too, I had to toggle off Lifestyles as my Sims all became depressed. I must give it another try. There's also the City Living toilets with the holograph options, they cause Sims to be focused too after watching them.
