I've seen a few threads about this from a year ago or more and there weren't any clear fixes then from what I saw. I suddenly can't use any chess tables. I don't use mods or CC. Ideas?

It's a known bug that seems to only happen during an event.

Having same trouble on Xbox 1, my sims can't play chess at the library as I tried for the time traveller quest, it says don't have permission to play not sure if it's due to the quest has don't go library that often but this quest tells you to do things at library that is how I found out .
Both. But the next thing that happened when I traveled home to SM was my apartment having no furniture or floors or walls. And my neighbor floating naked in a tub that wasn't there. So that game is a mess anyway! 🤷😝
