"Newbie" Question Regarding Save File Size

At risk of sounding like I'm narrating my life story, I put newbie under quotations because while I've been playing this game on and off for five years, this became a concern for me only recently as I've finally started playing with bb.moveobjects on cheats and adding a couple of mod outfits and Expanded Mermaids by Spinning Plumbob. I somewhat feel ashamed that I need to ask this, but then again I play games vanilla 100% of the time, as potential issues and lag arising from heavy modding worries me.

I was browsing the Bug Reports section briefly and saw that a large save file size due to mods and lots of decorations in lots can cause very slow load times and lag. I realized that I'm somewhat having these issues, and now wonder if my saves and a couple of lots I used bb.moveobjects on in are causing this problem.

What's a good and reasonable size for a save file to be, where it doesn't take an age to load?

  • @lapras751 Slow load times happen at different points for different reasons. One way to speed up initially launching the game is to set your Options to *not* list your mods and custom content when you load.

Save files (based on my testing in earlier Sims 4 days) load more slowly the more Sims and the more relationships between Sims (acquaintances etc.) exist in your save -- and of course, the more packs you have, the more Sims you probably have! You can remove any mods or mod setting about relationship culling to let the game manage relationships for performance. What the optimal size of a save file for load time is depends on your computer system, so there really isn't a way for us to predict that for you.

Lag on lots can definitely be connected to how much stuff is on that lot, especially to how many things Sims can interact with. It can also be connected to household size, as the game has to make more decisions about that household.

  • @lapras751 I have many houses in each world saved and Sims living in them. I have many player created paintings also saved in my library for the new builds I may want to use in houses I create. I love building houses so I have many builds and Sim testers living in them. Eventually I play the houses and Sim testers so they become part of the world and meet other sims and have relationships. Some get married and have children. The file gets big from this. LOL

I have very few mods. UI cheats is the one I always use. It's very helpful.

I don't think using bb.moveobjects on is an issue and it's necessary to use if you are a builder.

The only cure I've found is to start an new game an delete the old file. I dislike doing this cause all the sims I created had friendships with other sims in other worlds. Sad day when it's time to clean house.
