Sims 4 friendship bar and chatting not working

Hi I'm not too sure what's happening with my sims 4 gameplay. My Sims friendship bar isnt working and my sims no longer chat to one another (with the options such as "talk about cooking" etc) its just "chatting to ..." if that makes sense so there isnt any friendship increase in the bar. It only works when I make them talk to one another. Is there anything I can do to sort this? If it helps i have an Asus Laptop Core M and I've got the Legacy Mode on.
