@Sugarless22 You can certainly install Sims 4 on an external hard drive. However, depending on the type of drive, the connection it uses, and the speed of your internal drive(s), you may notice a significant drop in performance.
Other than slow internet speed, the most common reason updating can take too long is that Origin is using almost all of the processor's resources while running. There are ways to troubleshoot this issue, if you're interested. It's not likely to be fixed by installing the game on an external drive though.
