Why can’t I go to active careers or highschool with my sims?

I have all the packs, whenever my sims go to work to be a doctor or go to highschool it doesn’t give me the option to go with them. If I click on them on the bar it says at work and doesn’t give me an option to switch to their perspective. How do I fix this?
