Ah ok thats interesting, I actually have a Dell XPS L502x which ran sims 3 fine for years but after i upgraded it to the free windows 10 upgrade it would always crash. The laptops not working now, do you think it would be worth getting it fixed instead?

That will depend on what is wrong but most likely the answer will be no. Laptops are very integrated with most things soldered to the main board so if something is wrong with one of those parts the entire board needs replacing which will cost about the same as a brand new laptop.
If it is only because of a failed Windows 10 upgrade then it can be reinstalled clean from external media such as an USB stick that you can prepare on another PC.
