- We were able to enter spa-like buildings, grocery shopping and even shop for clothes in The Sims 2. Restaurants and many other venues that we could enter. Some of those activities existed way back in The Sims 1!
Those were great. :) Would like to see a come back.
Now about seeing them working or going to school, I think that's a little too much IMO. I play The Sims to escape a little from real life. To see everything being repeated in-game would be a bit too much and probably for the coding as well. The professions and self-employed features implemented in The Sims 3 are good enough to me. - Damienf51912 years agoSeasoned Rookie

Actually being able to go to work and get a set of tasks on a list to complete each day. Being able to go grocery shopping like in real life. Being able to walk through all of the stores and venues and into the spa. No more rabbit holes!

I like the idea, but some buildings like the Stadium wouldn't be feasible unless they're were rabbit holes. Shopping Venues through, shouldn't be rabbit holes or at the very least the part of the shop were you can buy and sell stuff shouldn't be rabbit holes. That is really stupid. I also really hope that in the next game EA doesn't over do it with the bars / club venues like they did in Sims 3 from Late Night onwards. - Damienf51912 years agoSeasoned Rookie

I feel the same way about the shops. Only problem is that some of it, like the school or all the work places being venues instead of rabbit holes, probably won't be feasible. EA has to worry about Frame rate after all, and an open world like the ones in the Sims 3 as opposed to the ones in the Sims 2 require a lot more processing power as it is. Damienf519 wrote:

I also agreed to this. I mentioned in my post that it would be too much for the game coding.- Well, with a a open town everything can't be open without causing some serious lag of the game constantly having to keep track of sims everywhere in a building like a school etc. I am actually fine with it as now... although more shops would be nice that aren't rabitholes, other than that, school, most jobs etc can stay rabbitholes. I have no want to see my police sim sitting at the desk for 9 hours.
- Personally, I'd like to see TS4 use rabbitholes only when there is no other feasible way to include something in game. I'd actually like to see my sims at work or at school and I'd like to see pretty much every job have it's own gameplay elements and play some kind of role in the community. Here's a few examples of how different jobs can be more meaningful:
Law Enforcement: Police officers could patrol the neighborhood, investigate disturbances, and arrest trouble-making sims.
Military: Soldiers could protect the town from alien invasions. I know this idea seems a little out there but the only other thing I could think of for the military career was to provide aid after natural disasters like the National Guard would, but everyone's against natural disasters.
Music: Instead of a music career, I'd prefer that we got the ability to put together bands from the start, with a few elements from Showtime mixed in. Also, bands need to be considerably easier to set up. In my game, everyone keeps wanting to play the same instrument.
Crime: Criminals shouldn't have an actual career; it kinda defeats the purpose. Instead, sims of poor moral fiber should be able to do various illegal activities, such as breaking into homes or places of business.
Politics: Sims that follow the political career could be elected mayor and pass laws that actually effect gameplay.
As for the whole rabbitholes vs. seeing your sims at work debate, I think I may have compromise. I get how some people are concerned about how showing sims at work could eat up a lot of processing power, while others just don't want to see their sims at work or school. So, my idea is to make workplaces into a type of pseudo-rabbithole. When sims go to work, they would disappear into the building in which they work and their entire workday would be simulated as it is in TS3. If you wanted to take more direct control of their job, however, you could click on the building and select to open it up. This will allow you to watch your sim at work or take control and instruct him to tackle certain projects, chat with coworkers, ask the boss for a raise or a promotion (assuming your sim has worked hard enough to deserve one), or just simply slack off. Should you get tired of following your sim at work, or just want to see what another sim is up to, you could click anywhere on the lot, select "close lot" or whatever, and the lot will revert back to a rabbithole.
The only problem this still leaves, however, is the fact that many rabbitholes aren't quite to scale. Hopefully Maxis will think of something in that regard. Maybe TS4 will allow larger lot sizes. - Agree with you OP..rabbit holes must die!
Stadiums are possible if the game was created to have a lesser footprint for most objects etc. One tile verses two tile objects. Round walls that don't take up as much room as a square box is a real possibility..but I doubt we will see them.
Reprogramming of how much space is needed for a wall on the grid is not new technology..it's old and not present in The Sims seires. Does it place on the larger grid line, or over on the 3/4 line or even less to the 1/4 line etc...it's possible but not probable.
That's a bad example but I don't speak 'game design speak'.
I'm sure some know what I mean though, ever wish you could place the wall only a 1/2 inch over on the grid etc.? Of course you have.
Off world jobs, please..don't want to be bothered with a Sim once it goes to work or to school..sorry, don't like goal oriented games in so much I have to care for my Sim while they are at work or school..hate it..make them go away and get out of my hair, again, please. I know many disagree but having to follow them to work is more an RPG/goal oriented game..and I hate that feature. :P 06Bon06 wrote:

Some venues like the spa and bistro I would love to be open, but I wouldn't want to have see my sims sat at a desk all day. It also definitely wouldn't be feasible IMHO to have a whole town like that, with every sim going about their daily work.- I would like to see the diner, bistro and grocery store open and a couple of other places. I don't want the schools and some jobs open as I don't want to watch my sims sit at a desk all day and I don't have to see to the needs while I am playing with the sim who stays at home.
- If we are to have open workplaces, I think that they should be limited to the part-time jobs, such as bookstore clerk, grocery store clerk, day-spa, and cemetary jobs that we currently have. I also think that a teen Sim could work as a barrista in a coffee house, the same as they used to be able to in the Sims 2.
But anything other than part-time should remain rabbithole. As for criminals and the military being open..well, both include the use of weapons in real life. I realize they're dumbed down in game currently, but the problem with having them become an open job is then you have to add some elements of "excitement" to make those careers interesting, and that begets adding violent activities, which then changes the whole tone of the game.
