Are you running the Sims 4 on Windows XP?

I am curious as to how many people are running the Sims 4 on Windows XP? I am thinking that most people have moved on to Windows 7 or higher. If this is true, I am wondering why EA is still catering to an outdated operating system that even it's creators, Microsoft, no longer supports and has ruled it obsolete? Most programs produced today do not support XP, nor do many websites. Why is EA still dragging us through the dark ages and holding us back? If EA utilized newer technology, rather than catering to an obsolete operating system, just think where the Sims could be today?

So, what operating system are you using, and what are your thoughts about EA catering to XP users?

  • XP is still a popular system. As long as quite a few people are using it then EA will try and keep them as it means more money for them

Dropping XP support probably wouldn't make much difference unless they dropped 32bit support entirely in favour of 64bit, but there's still quite a lot of 32bit windows 7 computers out there. One of the main differences between the two is how much memory programs can use - 32bit only has 4gb available, 64bit has practically unlimited memory (well, vastly more than you can physically install in any current home computer). Many games just stick with 32bit for maximum compatibility, while others have 32 and 64bit versions, but the thing is the 64bit versions are still the same game, so they can't just go using lots more memory and stuff in them if they can't also do the same tasks in the limited 32bit environment, as then they'd become two different games. So, unless they make it 64bit only, it's going to be living in the constraints of a 32bit environment anyway, which is little different between XP or Windows 7 (32bit), so they might as well support XP for as long as 32bit support is needed. Personally, I wouldn't mind developers pulling the plug on 32bit finally, I've not used it in many years. However, I do have sympathy for all the teenagers who rely on hand-me-down computers that are getting a bit fossilised at the corners, and the developers have to work out the best market for their software and make it to match the computers their audience own.
  • Yes. I have Windows XP x64 and The Sims 4 in 64-bit mode. It runs perfectly, all graphic settings set on max.
  • I ran my Sims 4 on a Windows XP 32bit with 2gb RAM for a little over 6 months last year until I bought a Windows 7 PC because I was sick of it crashing on almost every single loading screen (and I wanted to get Cats and Dogs). However, I currently can't play TS4 at all until I get another PC, with specs that can play Cats and Dogs, as the harddrive of my Win 7 died, and then I fried the motherboard of my 2nd Win 7 PC.

So I used to run TS4 on an XP but cannot anymore.
  • It's probably not intentional on their part (at least as far as maintaining XP compatibility goes). That is, it just happens that TS4 runs fine on XP without any intervention on their end, so they just made XP the minimum. If TS4 needed something that wasn't available on XP (like a higher version of DirectX, maybe) this wouldn't be the case.

When TS4 was under development, they probably did intend XP support to appeal to a wider audience, but along the development cycle they probably didn't need to raise the minimum OS until 64-bit became mandatory.

Anyway, this is just conjecture on my part based on my experience developing software.

I've closed the thread because, as pointed out, its an oldie. :)
