I'm all smoke and mirrors in this regard. In my story (that lives in my captions) the sims suffer and face unfair situations, but in game terms their motives are nicely filled, friendship bars are decently up and they earn satisfaction points. I don't want it any differently.
An example is when one of my androids shredded two computers in a row and I "explained" that as him having caught a stuxnet virus. He also got afflicted with the the curse that caused him to randomly hug people, so as a result he had to live isolated in that starter cabin in the Bramblewood for a time. Of course for the sim that was traumatic (especially since he's a city kid through and through), but in gameplay he was well cared for, learned useful new skills and made money. The game thought Connor was living his best life, only I knew that this wasn't the case.
Or the time a group of my sims got imprisoned in Oasis Springs for (alleged) industry espionage - Lots of cool screenshots of tents surrounded by fences and utter desert desolation. But since free will is off and I know the game, I could make them happy, not to mention that winning fights against the other inmates boosted their confidence with actual CONFIDENT moodlets. Their eventual trial I simulated as a Debate duel with the podium from DU. The sims really enjoyed that and again only I knew what was at stake here.
