Best practices: for rent

What is the safest way to build a residential rental ? Build everything first and then set it to residential rental ? Does editing a lot after sims move in cause problems ?

The announcement of the new B&H EP made me realise I never properly explored for rent. I want to give it a try now. My ideal scenario would be have a household start with renting out a studio and then slowly expanding to more units. But I am afraid of game corruption. I realise playing with for rent is like playing with fire but I want to try it once. What is the best way to approach this without ruining my game.

  • I also haven't played with For Rent yet, and I have built a lovely apartment complex for it too. From what I have seen it's best to first build it as a regular residential and then set it to residential rental. When I first built my apartments complex the BB catalog would lag considerably if used on residential rental lot type. Don't know if things have changed since. Editing a lot after sims move in seems to cause issues with the rents if you play as landlord, so you'll need to move all sims out, edit the lot, and then move them back in if you want to edit it.

  • I'm in the same boat. When the pack released I prepared several rental residential lots, but I only set units for a couple of those. Meaning there are several lots in my game where those units are still part of the base residential household, that was hardly played while waiting for announcements that all bugs were fixed. I'm still not sure wat was fixed regarding he For ERent problems.

My take is that unit tags were among the problems. Simmers setting unit categories/challenges etc, then reverting lot category or making other adjustments caused trouble. And I still believe that most problems came from downloaded residential rental lots from gallery, where the simmer could nt know what the builder had done with unit categories in the past. So, I think I would double check that all unit categories/tags are cleared before making any adjustments to the rental lot.

I will need to do some testing to start actually using the rental units I did prepare nearly a year ago. Backing up my game folder as I write. My plan is to avoid landlords, so I will not let any played sim own the lot, and maybe set the rent to §0, but handle the ownership and rent manually in my spreadsheet. I wn't ever play the Landlord anyway, it seems too tedious for my massive rotation.

I have a few rentals, but I don’t play as the landlord, or at least haven’t yet.  I think it is best to make or download your rental as a residential, and then turn it to a residential rental after I have finished furnishing it.   It might be best to use a practice save to test out others rentals.  When I place a residential rental in an established game I try not to replace it by something else ( even another residential Rental ) as I worry about corruption.  So far so good with the ones I am using.
