Broken Game and Bugs Years Later

I hope this gets passed on to the developers of The Sims 4.

The other day I decided after a three year break from TS4 I would reinstall my game and DLC. Note I raged quit back in 2017, and then tried again in 2018 and then gave up. This was a new pc (last year) that doesn't have the space for all the packs and patches etc. (Small SSD) But I felt ok, I want to play TS4 but I hope my old bugs have been fixed years later.

It took a whole Saturday afternoon to install TS4 and half the EPs, half the GPs, half the Stuff packs (I don't have any kits). I sat here thinking is this gonna be worth it to sit here all day?

Finally! it got installed, something should be done about Origin download helper Qtime thingy. It only slows down to a crawl and isn't helping anything.

I proceeded to load the game, I'm not impressed with the way things have changed on the loading screen. I actually like the old screen when Ryan and Graham were here. You know the white one with the glimpses of Sims and objects etc.

Everyone should know by now, I loved Dine Out. I didn't mind we couldn't run our own restaurant the way we did in TS2. Because my Sims helped the waiters clean up and went and talked with customers in that little list of things to ask etc. which made my Sim owner very busy and I didn't need my Sim to cook etc. That was back then when DO was new.

However, in a vanilla game, with only half the EPs, GPs, and stuff packs ( I think I stopped at Parenthood) DO is broken. I can only assume no it's not one of the later packs that broke DO but one of your patches in the past three years. :/

Sending a Sim (newly created, no saves no nothing, fresh game) to a restaurant was different. The cook stands outside and hours later when all orders are in decides to come in and start cooking. By that time two or three hours has passed and my Sim still hasn't gotten to order let alone eat.

This didn't happen in my game in 2017. One reason I raged quit back then was because the game wiped out my saves..three years of play. When the game changed the auto and save as features. I always saved as save as etc. and one day after that patch it wiped out every thing let alone all the bugs I was experiences in the packs I did like. Another reason was because the game wiped out all my hard work on Chefs and waiters etc. in Dine Out. After training them all and they did their jobs the way DO was intended to work the game, one day (after a patch) decided to wipe them from my game. I sent my Sim to one of her restaurants and they were all gone and replaced even though I had followed instructions here to put them all in a house (a work around to keep the game from culling NPCs) etc. That worked very well for a very long time but once again a patch wiped all that out. The point being I decide I will give my game another try because I did spend money on half the EPs back then, half the stuff packs, and half the GPs....but no, again DO has even more problems now. One being the chef and others stand outside the buildings waiting to go in, if ever, and the whole DO experience is ruined. Whether sending a Sim to dine out and or to play as the owner of the place.

Things like this may be very small to some but once things start to pile up and I will not even go into all the other things, I quit again. I may not like all Maxis ideas, I'm not expected to like them all. I'm an adult, I don't need every little thing Maxis sells. However, I expect my game to not constantly need a fix to fix a fix. And the bugs and mishaps and glitches and constant needing a patch for this or that to fix what another patch did is why I stopped buying as far back as Parenthood. I missed out on Seasons, Pets, Uni, Paranormal, Magic, etc. Because of your bugs...I can see bugs when others play. I won't spend money on broken packs. Nor spend money for you to have to patch my games over and over...

Maxis, I hope you understand why some of us are so determined to not buy from you again, until you start to address the problems you create.

  • I like DO. My sims's don't own/ operate but I like to take them out to eat. I'd say love DO, but wont because it's broken.

I don't recall it being broken when I bought it years ago. There were game mechanics I didn't like (food took too long, food should be better quality) but it wasn't technically broken. The only positive change I've noticed is that fun doesn't get tanked anymore when in the restaurant.

In DO now, I need a mod to make them sit down to eat. I need to do reset cheats on the chefs. I need to design the restaurants so that they can't talk across tables, so they actually socialize with the sims at their table. I need to make sure the wait stations are perfectly placed. I need to mod the game so that sims can't view any objects so that they don't get up from the table and start staring at a sign on the wall. Or don't have any viewable objects in the restaurant and gain environment with too many rugs. I can't use stereos or wall speakers.

I'm not including new things (new meaning since the early days of the pack) that seem by design that I detest and workaround with cheats. You know, I'm not sure what is by design half the time. For all I know, some of the things I mentioned aren't considered bugs. But I consider them bugs because, to me, they break the pack, since sim can't...um Dine Out due to distractions.

@Cinebar I remember losing saves awhile back because they were somehow gettting overwritten with very old saves that I deleted. I always use Save As so that shouldn't have happened. Those old saves were supposed to be deleted. I had to start over, with 3 different familes. Not sure if you're talking about that or another time. Right now while tweaking base saves I noticed that the incorrect family icons are attached to the save. At least they saves themselves are fine, but that's just...well concerning to me given the past.

A long time ago started my first legacy save in TS4. I think Right after I switched to play the adult children, and update broke my save. I had no CC at the time and the few mods I had were updated. I haven't made a legacy family since.

It's frustrating that a lot of my time goes to putting fixes into my game, much is still broken outside of DO. I didn't do a count, but I'd guess that around 33% or so of my mods are fixes. Mods which I need to check for updates every time the game updates. Sometimes I stop playing for awhile because I spend so much time installing or updating mods that I feel Sims oversatuartion or something I need to play another game.

  • Shift click on the chefs and reset them. This will make them enter the restaurant immediately.

Another thing I noticed right away was there are things in the 'pie menus' of choices for the Sim to do when clicking on a different Sim or our own or an object etc. or even lot traits etc. that aren't possible...because those were features of DLC someone might not own or have installed. What? Yes, why is this acceptable in a life simulator? That's just sloppy programming in my opinion. It may be very convenient to Maxis to just go ahead and include things from other packs into options so it will be there when a player does buy another pack with those features but that is more like mobile games or Free To Play games where yes, there might be an option listed for something but not possible until the person buys into the microtransactions...but at least those games tell you what microtransaction you need to buy or level up or something (with points and or money) to be able to do that, but it makes absolutely no sense at all in life simulator, especially if the options aren't even grayed out!

I think I was clicking and clicking something for the Sim to do but released, wait, that isn't possible unless I own x pack etc. I think they should clean up the code and stop putting in unnecessary code especially when the player doesn't actually have a pack. The base game wedding venue choice is a very good example of what I'm talking about...but there are a lot more things I noticed (but can't remember at the moment) that shouldn't even be seen by the player if it can't be done. How annoying!
  • Back to DO, years ago DO as I said played as it should on my machine however, since I took that long break and retried and then retried this last time this year, I noticed the difference (I forgot to mention) was used to when I sent a Sim to eat at one of my restaurants (I built) (not owned by anyone) if I clicked the table I wanted and was first then the waiter would wait on my Sim first. This was not true this year, just the other day, but the guy went to all the other tables first (though my Sim was seated first at a table) and took their orders...this right here is also why Sims don't get their food cooked first. Not only that the game generated chef can't cook the menu but because the waiter no longer waits on our Sims first if we were first before any townies. Argh, so annoying how they have ruined this pack.
  • I have several packs, so I don't see the unusable actions, however I'm not surprised considering bugs I've encountered in game over the years.

My recollection of the way DO used to work is that my sims were always served first, regardless if whether the table or the host thingy was clicked. Yes, it is different now. My sims are never served first anymore, no clue why. Also, the wait staff drop food a lot more. I think that wait staff needs were also frozen, I use cheats now to freeze them so my sims don't have to wait longer for food.

My bad! I now remember one long-time bug with DO. I can't use barstools, so that, you know, I can make a proper diner. Sims kept walking up to and talking to other sims and not eating at their tables or waiting for talbes at couches.

In case anyone is interested, it seems like every time there are bar tables and stools in a restaurant, the sims start behaving like they are in a bar, so they keep talking to sims at tables, even if the private tables are used. I think it's connected to the stools, not the tables. There was a buger/ fast food joint that was put in my gallery when I bought DO, I can't remeber it's name. There was a bug where sims would walk into the kitchen and start talking Nothing would keep them out of the kitchen. The did not eat at the tables just chat in the kitchen. The place only had bar tables and barstools. I replaced all with tables and charis and sims stopped going into the kitchen and ate.

@Cinebar I wanted to quote you, but I can't because I'm too little. This forum can't see that I'm a force for good and can't see all my posts on AHQ, which is by design not a bug. So, here are some emojis, because that I can do   At least I think I can....
  • I have an installation that does not go past University, whether in packs or updates/patches. Do works reasonably well in that when my sims go to a restaurant, they get served in a reasonably prompt manner. Have never tried to own/run one. The installation on a newer machine, which is closer to current, has your DO issues. Among others. Let's just say that installation is seldom played as I want a game to be fun, not aggravating.

Unfortunately, my fresh installs into a fresh machine so to speak have patches past a University pack so I'm assuming the bugs I am experiencing are in one of the later patches.
  • In addition to newer patches, Seasons may also be a culprit. I do not have that in the old installation even though it predates University. Agree with your assumption. I remember a lot of uproar regarding Eco, and there was another that brought a lot of grief, but I forget which.
  • I've experienced the Save bug "Code 0" which literally makes it Impossible to play the game at all. How old is this game? Unreal that the Wedding DLC patch was delivered w/o proper play testing before release. I expect this from small studios like Hello Games, not a multi-million $ studio with no shortage of highly educated individuals. I hope this bug gets squashed soon. I want to play this game again, I did not/will not buy the wedding DLC, it's not really my thing. How about instead of releasing endless DLC's w/ shallow content, EA just lets us develop our own worlds, I want more than 5-6 houses in each world. I would try to make a world w/ at least 12 lots of various sizes, at least 2-4 64x64 lots for big venues & whatnot. One thing I miss about TS3 is the world editor, sadly I tried playing TS3 on my new rig shortly after building it, but I forgot how to play that game, lots of stuff was changed in TS4 & it's really hard to remember how to play older versions.
  • I would love a world editor. There are trees I want to remove from WC. For seven years now. :/ However, I would prefer they patch up all the bugs in the packs I did buy, then I will consider newer packs as long as I don't see the same problems popping up in those packs over and over again. The bugs lists on the EA site rarely seems to get the patches most people need. :(
