Cloud saving? (Syncing saves and game files across devices)

So I have a gaming pc and a regular laptop that I play sims 4 on. I play on my laptop mostly right now because I have been struggling with depression and I'm mostly very fatigued and just unmotivated to get out of bed so getting myself to get up and play sims was one of my biggest challenges (no matter how ridiculous that sounds). When I got a new laptop I thought I could play sims 4 on it when I can't get out of bed but want to play. I didn't get a gaming laptop because I didn't think I needed it because I would mainly play on my pc when I get out of my depressive state. And I wanted a touchscreen for writing notes.

So back on topic. I usually switch my game files like saves, cc and mods, tray files, and screenshots between the two devices by linking the sims 4 folder to network and copying and pasting from one folder on one computer to the other. It's kind of annoying (especially when it comes to cc) but it works. But I really wished that I could play on my computer, save to cloud, and then go on my laptop and just open up that save. I wish there was way the game just synced the "The Sims 4" folder across devices. So when I add cc to one folder it also adds it to the other folder on the other device. I'm able to do this with cities skylines that I have on steam. I can save my game to the cloud or just save it normally and if it's saved to the cloud it will show up if your signed in on another device.

Maybe this will come with sims 5? Does anyone else play on different devices? How do you manage it?

  • I used to play on my desktop and laptop. I would copy my save onto a flash drive when I wanted to switch devices. It was a hassle though and I finally gave up playing on the desktop.
  • I play exclusively on my do-everything desktop—I bought this PC in February of 2020 intending purely to use it for gaming...then the world went mad.

I had a 200-hour save on my laptop but decided to start fresh, but if Origin sync'd games via the cloud the way Steam's been doing since long before Sims 4 was new, I'd have definitely brought my save over. If I'm ever back on the road again doing journalism and need to port a save to play in some hotel somewhere, I guess I'll just use a flash drive or a cloud-backup service like Dropbox. But yeesh, EA, cloud saves have been a thing for ages. There's no excuse for a major AAA title not to have them.
  • I just want to spread some hugs and support to you, while you’re going through depression. Anyone who has had or is currently going through it, can totally relate to what you said.

At the moment, I am going through an autoimmune flare up and I am physically and mentally exhausted. On my days off from work, I really want to put my game on but I’m too tired. Like you, I have also been through a bad depressive state. I get it. You’re not alone. ❤️

I can’t really help much, I just wanted to share what I did when swapping out devices, but it sounds like you’re doing the same (if I’m comprehending correctly).

I haven’t played on a laptop ever since I got my gaming rig. But when I bought my computer, I put my saves, tray and mods into one folder and zipped it. I then uploaded it to drop box and transferred those files to my computer. I never went back and forth between my laptop and pc to keep playing those saves. So I didn’t have to deal with the headache of constantly replacing my files. Hopefully one day we’ll get the option to just play across different devices without any hassle.
  • Getting out of bed is a big challenge when you're depressed *hugs* eventually you will manage it every day, so keep going xxx

I used to play downstairs and up and I would transfer my save to Dropbox to download on the other computer. My biggest bugbear was remembering to upload the save at the end of each session, I was always forgetting to do it.

My pc is in my room so I just have to get up when I forget I can't imagine having to go up and down the stairs lol. Right now using the stairs gives me chest pains.

And thanks for your kind words. ?

I wish you the best and hope you get better.

I think I tried doing the Dropbox thing when I first got my pc and had to transfer from the old family pc to mine. It was a hassle because there's a limit and I had to upload little bits. I don't even have everything back on my pc like screenshots and videos. I found that connecting the two computers through the network was the best thing. And I only found that out when I got my laptop. I will probably do that next time I try to finish switching stuff from the old pc to my current one.

Can't you save your files to One drive (cloud) on Windows 10? Or any other cloud service? Many pc manufacturers offer the free Drop box storage (I know you said it was a hassle) with a greater amount of gigabytes for storage, and or their own free 100GB free storage etc. Just need the internet to upload and download. All you have to do with One drive is sync.

Yes I have one drive but my mods folder was too big lol. I'll try again but I'm pretty sure last time I tried I ran out of space.
  • I prefer to keep my Sims, and whatever else I do on computers, on a distinct device. In general, I don't trust the Cloud as whatever is there is available 24/7/365 to whatever nefarious individuals are out there. In terms of sims, each installation is at a different level of version/packness so want them separate. This is particularly true for my many TS4 households whose livelihood depends on their little farms.
