Compatibility & Self-Discovery Explained

Hi!

This thread is a 2.0 version of these threads put together:

Due to spoiler tag issues in this forums and how the post hierarchy system works here (and how posts can be collapsed), I've decided to make a new thread which could also look in other things.

Turn-ons and turn-offs for example, even though the description of each one gives you the exact into which attracts sims.

This thread contains info on the following topics:

If you have any additions or suggestions, let me know! Comment under this main post or any other post that isn't linked here!

    Self-Discovery system

What is Self-Discovery system? It's a system which add new personality traits to young adult and older sims. Young adult and older sims can have a maximum of 6 personality traits. If self-discovery moments come to younger sims or pets, decline them.

Most of the self-discovery moments come from Growing Together. A few special cases won't require the pack.

Each trait is put in one of the categories which the game tracks. Some categories categories have maximum and minimum values while others only have a maximum value. Once a certain threshold is met, the game will either:

    • Suggest your sim a random trait from the category.
    • If one of sim's traits is in the category but in the opposite value, a trait replacement is suggested.
    • If sim already has a trait from the category and in the same value, nothing happens.

Sims can have up to three self-discovery moments in their life. Declining a trait suggestion won't count towards the limit. Using a Re-Traiting potion will remove the extra traits (unclear if it resets the counter though).

Here is each category. Under each category I'll show what traits are associated with it and include additional posts on the message and interaction that help towards it. If it's a category with minimum and maximum values, I will use + and - symbols to indicate it (+ can replace - and vice versa).

      Skill

Seems to track how many mistakes and poor quality things has your sim made, with each mistake gaining points.

This is a min/max value category, including these traits:

      • Perfectionist +
      • Clumsy -

        Perfectionist

[Sim Name] has been quite a Perfectionist lately! [Sim Name] thinks things should be done with high skill and lots of focus.

        When replacing Clumsy trait:

[Sim Name] has been nailing it! Clumsy no more, has [Sim Name] discovered the key to being a Perfectionist?

        Clumsy

[Sim Name] has been making quite a number of Clumsy mistakes while exercising, cooking, or crafting lately.

        When replacing Perfectionist trait:

[Sim Name] can't seem to do anything right lately, making Clumsy mistakes left and right! Maybe it's time to let go of the need to be a Perfectionist.

        Wise

[Sim Name] has finally reached their golden years, and has quite a few stories to tell about their journey. Could this Sim be Wise?

      Virtues

Seems to track how your sim treats other sims and what good or bad things they do.

This is a min/max value category, including these traits:

      • Good +
      • Proper +
      • Generous +
      • Evil -
      • Mean -

        Suggestion messages

        Good

[Sim Name] has been doing Good things lately. [Sim Name] isn't a 'goody-two-shoes' or anything, but they can be.

        When replacing Evil trait:

[Sim Name] has been pretty Good lately. Is this a fluke or has [Sim Name] truly reformed from Evil?

        When replacing Mean trait:

[Sim Name] is learning the hard way that not many like Mean Sims. So has [Sim Name] been taking a new approach as a Good Sim.

        Proper

[Sim Name] feels being Proper is very important to them and seems to be spending more time on themselves.

        When replacing Evil trait:

[Sim Name] has felt the spark of reform! Should they change their Evil ways and live a more Proper life?

        When replacing Mean trait:

[Sim Name] has felt the spark of reform! Should they change their Evil ways and live a more Proper life?

        Generous

[Sim Name] is awfully Generous, wouldn't you agree?

        When replacing Evil trait:

[Sim Name] sure is Generous, has [Sim Name] forgone their wicked ways?

        When replacing Mean trait:

[Sim Name] has been feeling pangs of regret for their past Mean actions, could they actually be a Generous Sim deep down inside?

        Evil

[Sim Name] has been dabbling in the dark side of life and a spark of Evil has taken root.

        When replacing Good trait:

[Sim Name] hasn't been very Good lately. Is that a glimmer of Evil twinkling in their eye?

        When replacing Proper trait:

[Sim Name] has not been very nice to others lately. [Sim Name] is finding being Proper to be such a bore... Evil is where the fun is at!

        Mean

[Sim Name] has felt the sweet tangy thrill of being Mean! Should they let it become a part of their personality?

        When replacing Good trait:

[Sim Name] is finding being Good to be overrated. [Sim Name] is enjoying the thrill of being Mean!

        When replacing Proper trait:

[Sim Name] is finding Proper to be too much work. In fact, [Sim Name] has been pretty Mean lately.

    Sim Characteristics & Social Compatibility

If you have Growing Together, then you have a new likes and dislikes category: Sim Characteristics.

When you put on a Sim Characteristic preference, it will take effect on other sims as soon as you meet them (if they have the right traits). Each Characteristic has traits that add points (+) and traits that remove points (-). If the Characteristic is dislike, the points will be reversed. So 3 points would become -3 points.

Here are the characteristics and what traits they include:

The final compatibility score is a sum or both sim's compatibility score. And if it's not neutral, a puzzle piece icon will indicate their compatibility. Here are the compatibility tiers and their point ranges:

    • Amazing: 6 and up
    • Good: 2 to 6
    • Neutral: -2 to 2
    • Bad: -2 to -6
    • Awful: -6 and lower

So, for example, if Sim A has 3 points towards Sim B and Sim B has 4 points towards Sim A, it totals up to 7 points, making the game show Amazing Compatibility for both of the sims.
