Complaint, Dropping Mac Users

Maxis you give a three day notice MAC users (Lion10.7) should not update their games on Oct. 3rd or they will no longer be able to play their owned packs. To never update their games again. I'm disappointed you couldn't have given a heads up sooner than this. Like a year, or thirty days or more. Especially since some probably are needing a patch for something. I have no idea how many users you have using a MAC (lion 10.7) but this is very disheartening EA and Maxis couldn't have given a wider time frame for these users to find out their games would no longer be able to play if they install any new patches. Surely you knew this longer than the three day warning.

Apple decided it would happen now as they got the metal ready early and they want it changed now. It was Apples doing - not EA's because Apple wants to outdo Intell systems for one and two they want to be rid of open gl. I got this info right from the Apple/Mac site by the way.

Again, if the problem is with Apple machines/software only, why is EA also cutting off Windows machines as well? Because 32-bit was old tech? You'd better believe it. However, 32-bit was old tech when EA launched TS4. That is my issue. Launching on 32-bit was a mistake. Considering the issues that TS3 had due to a lack of memory with all of its add-ons, you'd think that EA would have realized it, too. I remember writing to EA about the decision and that was years ago.

Having said that if there is going to be a 64-bit fix for TS3 on Mac (and if EA is the one making it), EA should do the same for TS3 for Windows-based PCs. I really hope that they do. Although, no doubt, a 64-bit upgrade will require me to tether my game to the Origin client for the rest of eternity.

Their argument for 32 bit was about PCs. It was 32 bit because of how many of these old computers were running 32 bit Windows. Then they added the 64 bit client. Now they're dropping the 32 bit one. My own feeling was they should have made a game for modern machines, not 10 year old gaming pcs (at the time), but no one asked me :)

    Yes, exactly this.

Apple uses Intel chips. Do you mean Microsoft?

Edit: I do agree with you that 32 bit should have been dropped years ago. I don't know too much about Apples other than my mom swears by them for photo editing and my music-tech son finds them more powerful for his professional needs though he games on PC.
  • Getting off topic, this is not about dropping the 32bit format, but that's another complaint since they are also doing that in midstream when maybe they should have thought about not including XP etc. for pc when they were building TS4. But that OS is still listed as an acceptable OS, which yeah, many who are still using XP are probably using a 32bit machine. This is about telling MAC users two days ahead of time, don't install patch or you will never be able to play again. Only two days ahead of a patch. Knowing they would probably break the game but only giving a two day notice. Maybe they should have given a notice like, folks, the next patch in thirty days will probably break your game, so we are telling you now (thirty days ahead of time) no longer install any more patches instead of springing it on someone who might have needed a patch only to find out don't install it and we're done, see ya!

Mac dropped Mac users when they went with metal - it's not EA's fault - blame Mac when they dropped open GL.Put the blame where it belongs. And everyone dropped 32 bit - it should have been dropped years ago. Nothing is good in 32 bit.

What are you talking about "got the metal ready early"? Metal was introduced in macOS in 2015 and all Mac models produced since 2012 support it. Those are 7 year old machines with ageing hardware, not exactly new.

Technology moves forwards, not backwards. You state that 32-bit should have been dropped years ago and nothing is good about it and you are absolutely right. The move to Metal is exactly the same concept. OpenGL is 27 years old, let's move on.

You say you got this info from Apple's website, where do Apple state that they want to outdo Intel on their main site or dev. site? Do you have a link?

I typed in why is apple getting rid of open gl and it went to Mac. It said it there they have metal ready in September instead of later this year. it also states about their system outdoing intell. I am not a Mac player so I can only go by what i read on their site. Type in questions and get your own links it is how i do it.

I am pc all the way - personally i don't care what Apple does - or what machine is better than the next - I get the machines i know and play on. I simply wanted to know where EA is getting blamed for something if it was true or not and it isn't. Apple can do what they want to do and it really is none of any of our business anyway - but i do like knowing the truth and what the users of that equipment are actually saying.

I only stated what I saw on their page - I have no idea what Apple does - I am a pc player period. On top of it I am not even a big fan of Intell - I am AMD all the way so even the so called faster chip does not sway me... I really - really don't care. And if info they put on their site is out there - well I am simply going to believe it - it matters NOTto me at all - what matters is the truth - that it is not an EA issue or blame.
  • I get why people would be upset. I do.

But I don't agree that this was sprung on them. The notice that this was going to happen eventually has been available for a while. It's not up to EA to make people go read things. Heck, most people don't read EULAs or Terms of Service, but they still apply.

And "how many people go look at X" isn't a valid reason to be upset, in my opinion. I got caught flatfooted because my laptop doesn't have the memory to handle the latest Windows update. It just flat out isn't there. I went looking for help and found a news article saying that cheap systems like my laptop were out of luck - dated three months ago. Plum to be me, but that's the way it is, and it's up to me to find a way to deal with it. Not Microsoft.

This is how misinformation gets perpetuated. 'metal ready in September'?? What you are saying, or trying to say, simply makes no sense. I asked you for a link because, honestly, I don't believe that you fully understand what Metal is so would like the exact source you are quoting from. Or are you reading about Apple using their own chips to replace Intel in the future? What does Intel have to do with Metal? Are you looking at benchmarks with integrated chips and how they perform? Have you looked at similar benchmarks for NVIDIA and AMD GPUs? Are you looking at current models or going back to the earliest 2012 models capable of supporting Metal?

Cinebar's original point is that EA stated too late about dropping support for 10.7 Lion users. I agree that it would have been good to get the information out there earlier but those with compatible hardware can update to a later OS so it's fixable.

One more thing, dropping support for Lion users has nothing to do with Metal and everything to do with the ActivationUI file in the game.
