I don't play with mods, and I've never had an emotional death, but that's in part because I don't go out of my way to try and cause them. That said, I have killed off a
ton of bothersome NPCs, and freezing and heat exhaustion are the quickest and most efficient way to dispose of them. Dress them in their summer or winter clothes on a freezing or heat-wave day (depending on the season), order them to cloudgaze, and they're dead in an hour or two. Much faster than drowning them, although I do have a pool for that.
Elders, I kill off the fun way—have them work out until they get the critically exhausted moodlet, then woohoo them until they shove off.

In my own experiments, I've found that a sim who cooks while inspired doesn't start fires. Along the same lines, sims who paint or write at low levels while inspired also tend to produce Excellent quality works, so I think the game takes into account the "right" emotion for whatever skill is being built.
