Do you ever cheat a sim's skills for story/character reasons?

I've never done this, but I'm starting a new game and my main sim will be a late-60's hippy dude who I've imagined as a guitar-toting, VW bus driving, peace-loving, vagabond-type.

I'm thinking that it only makes sense to raise his guitar skill to at least level 4 at the start (via MCCC).

This has actually got me thinking that maybe we should be allowed to select (or roll) our sims' starting skill levels (like an RPG) without having to resort to cheats/mods. Why should every sim be conceived as a neophyte at everything? What have they been doing their whole lives?

  • I've never done it, but I think I would if I was playing a story where it would make sense for a sim to already have a skill at the start of the 'story.'

I do, however, have sims wish for skills at the wishing well somewhat often. It's a fun way to get your sim some levels (or even max) in a random skill without really cheating.

Is it only through MCC this can be done? I am currently playing without mods or cc.

It can be done through the cheat console, although it's a bit more cumbersome.

    Good to know, thanks!
  • I play on a really long lifespan, and I altered the skill gain rate. What I do is start with the default skill gain, then I flag my sims for skill gain change to slow down things when I feel is the right time. The only skill I cheat is photography.
  • I definitely do it but I am quite limited on what I do with it and when I do it. My general rule of thumb is that I will do it on my personal Sim and then on a particular household if there is are specific things I want to steer the narrative towards.

I have plenty of times cheats don't matter in games like sims not to mention I play them as if writing a character sims should know how to do some things based on who they are supposed to be. However, if we had a dice roll option for skills I'd use that.

I really miss those two 'extra' trait slots. It's far easier for me to give each Sim one negative trait (for a well-rounded, interesting character) than it is when you only have three slots initially. Yes, we can 'purchase' additional traits, but that takes time.

ETA: I do roll dice to determine the toddler's trait.
  • I do this for some sims (like ones where I want to establish their careers right away or ones that are supposed to be geniuses in a particular skill set.)
