Does anyone know if winter will kill off the garden plants?

The reason I'm asking is because I have a garden that has almost perfect garden plants, except for those that came with the Jungle Adventure. My sim is currently working on those, to get them to perfection as well. It has literally taken me real years just to get this garden to the state it's in now, and I would hate to see all my and my sims hard work just go down the drain. Does anyone know if winter will kill off the garden plants? This garden is really too large to be placed in a green house.

  • @EmmaVane Thanks for posting Emory's response. I'm intrigued by the phrasing "certain plant species," not all.
  • Plants have different seasonal cycles IRL.

    Maybe alien plants are different.

Maybe Plasma Fruit grow better in the winter when nights are longer, and should be stockpiled for the summer when nights are shorter :p
  • @EmmaVane Good point. I'm hoping that phrasing is due to the plants being more realistic and having different seasonal cycles.
  • That is going to be my main problem in my legacy save. The family is wealthy because of the crops and winter will kill every single plant. :'( Winter will not be the first season on the game. Today I saw the glass roofs and greenhouses, so building one will be my top priority.

My guess is that they go dormant until spring. I cant image the gurus wanting to deliberately ruin our hard work or suddenly make gardening restricted to greenhouses.

They could have some plants dormant during other seasons, not just winter -- for example if we have pumpkin plants they could be planted but not produce pumpkins till fall. Most fruit trees don't die (where they have to be replanted) in winter, they just go dormant. So I'd say that gardens will be fine, they just won't produce. If you're worried, set aside a secrion of your house as a conservatory or "greenhouse" of sorts (why we're getting the glass roofs) and put your most prized plants inside during the cold period -- you can move them in Build/Buy from the ground to a planter box or planter pot.

I imagine they don't harvest in Winter, unless you grow them indoors - like a greenhouse?

Can't know if they're just killed off for good though.

I truly believe it was confirmed that we'll get a Greenhouse, so I am thinking, maybe the plants will go into hibernation at least the ones that are outside and exposed to the weather!

I don't believe we're getting an actual greenhouse but with the glass roofs you can build your own or add a greenhouse room to your house. You can already grow plants indoors even without the glass roofs, if they're in a planter box (can hold up to 4 plants) or a planter pot (that can hold hold a single plant). Trees might be an issue; they can go into the planter pots but you have to make sure your walls are tall enough (at least the middle height).

How do you guys maintain your gardens?! I only recently got my sim into it and she had about 8 plants and 2 trees, but it was such a chore to water them every day and tend to them. I dont want to hire a garden professional either because I wanted my sim to take pride in her garden but after 2 days of having to do other things the garden started going downhill.

I do use a sprinkler mod (from Brazen Lotus) but with sprinklers coming in Seasons I might not need it. With the sprinklers coming in the pack, that should make watering less of a time drain especially for large gardens. Once you get high enough in Gardening skill you'll get the Tend Garden interation where Sims will automatically do what needs to be done (weed/water) then it's just a matter or watching for the sparkling plants which means they're ready for either harvest or evolution.

    Oops someone already answered.
In addition to that there's a gardening overhaul coming in the patch, maybe it'll make things less tedious on our green thumb sims.
