How do you split a family to move some into a new empty house?

I cant work it out, maybe because there are no empty lots? The only solution I can see is to go to manage worlds, split the family and merge the split with another occupied house. Then go to that house and move the original residents to Not in World.

Is there a better way to do this? I don't like that by merging, the new split off family get a house for free, I want them to buy a house

In my case, the son got married, and I want the two of them to leave the house and move into a vacant one. Can't figure out how to split a household!

    On the map
go to the top and click 2nd icon, which looks like about 3 sims stuck together and says manage households
find and click the household you want to split
one of the options is the two arrows one; click it
one side of the menu will be blank; go to the top of it and click the icon that has a sim figure with a + beside it and it will say new household
move the sims you want in it and name it
click the check and you may have to place this new family then.
    Hope this helps. :)
  • It was so much easier to split a family in Sims3, despite the many faults in that game. Too bad the dev team didn't glean the good points from TS3 to keep in TS4. But, what can you do? I've put off playing the game yesterday and now today, even though I had a blast playing it two days ago. :( Don't know what it is, exactly, but I'm starting to feel frustrated.

Go to Manage Worlds to manage the household. You can choose to create a new household. The UI is a bit changed, but this is still basically accurate: https://www.ea.com/games/the-sims/the-sims-4/news/splitting-and-merging
  • It's way too complicated. I also wish that when you asked a Sim to move in to your home from a previous home they could bring a portion/percentage of their household funds with them. They always move in with $0 unless they are the only one in their previous household. If two people split from a roomie family of four, the ones that remain in the main house get most of the $ and the couple that left only start out with their basic funds of like $20K even though they worked to contribute to the main household funds. It's annoying.
