How far away should I sit from the fire (so I don't die)?

I'm making an indoor firepit (yes, it can be done without burning the house down). I did this before, but I put the chairs too close to the pit and people started catching on fire. Does anyone know the number of squares one has to be away from the fire before it becomes a hazard?

@DeKay You just take the fire pit that normally goes on a campground and stick it inside. I had one for my dark ages house, and now I’m putting one in a modern temple for a religion I’m creating which worships The Watcher, Fire, and cats, haha.

I've never had any luck in having an indoor firepit without the hazard of things catching on fire.
