Infants when other Sims are not at home...

Need some information on caring for infants when other Sims are not at home.

Specifically, I now have a teenager who is raising her baby brother. I'm wondering when she goes off to school (and I follow her, at least some days) what the best course of action might be.

I'm thinking the options are A ) infant gets sent to automatic "daycare" (which is free and I think potentially unreliable??) or B ) hire a nanny
- which is more realistic in the situation of a 17 year old with a dependent?
- which is the better in game mechanic? (thinking safety of the child not being taken by child services, milestones, ease of care when teen caregiver returns home..)
- is there an option C?

Daycare. The nannies are a tad weird in that they tend to hang around, call your kid and invite them over to their place. Huge ick factor to me. Even my Rock Star and his wife utilize Daycare. At least now their older kids can take care of the toddler while the parents are gone.

I find Nanny's stress me out. They don't do anything for the baby, they will watch tv, make food etc. while baby is crying. At some point they may help a little. By now I'm screaming at the Nanny and threatening I will find you and I will hurt you.
  • I've had infants and toddlers return from daycare with nearly depleted hunger bars several times, what can be potentially dangerous.

Realistically an impoverished teen would use the daycare option, which is government-provided, free, but unreliable. Paying a nanny would be the luxury option.

Be aware that daycare has an advantage or disadvantage, depending on how you see it: Toddler sent there will learn skills while away. I enjoy skilling up my little ones, so for me this sort of crossing into my parent boundaries, lol. But it can be a big help for your teen!
  • I would always choose daycare. For me so far, that’s always been straightforward and I haven’t had any major issues with it — maybe the odd glitch but nothing infant-endangering. I agree with others too that daycare is more realistic for a teenager than hiring a nanny.
  • Maybe there lives nice old lady next door who wouldn't mind looking after the nooboo for couple hours/ during special occasions?
  • The only glitch I've had with daycare lately is that sometimes the infant is off the lot when my sim returns home. It's a known bug. It only happens once in a while, though. Otherwise, the infant is fine when my sim returns, no needs in the red or anything.
  • I use the Better Nanny mod from LittleMsSam.

  • Realistically, daycare would be optimal, but you could work out that the kind neighbor is watching out for the kid with a nanny. Personally, I just use butlers, but they aren't exactly optimal unless your kids are from a rich family, or even a middle class family since butlers aren't all that expensive. I haven't had any problems with any of them, but I do use Better Nanny and Better Butler mods - the ones from LittleMissSam, of course.

Depends on the story you want to tell, honestly.
  • So folks know, Paige has been sending her little brother to daycare while she is at school. At this time it is working fine. She did 'hire a nanny' for prom night, mostly because I felt that evening is not daycare time.
