Is there a way to adopt a child already in game?

Hi! My friend's matriarch died in her baby challenge, leaving a toddler and baby behind. We decided a sim in my game could adopt them, she sent them to me via Sims 4 Tray Importer. My question is, is there a way to adopt children who already exist in the game? I know it gives the option to "adopt as caregiver", but I'm thinking that's not exactly the same thing. I am not opposed to mods if that's the only way it can be done. I'm going to have this take place in one of my LP videos so I'd really like to do this right, especially given the circumstances. Thanks!

  • No, I haven't put them in game yet. They are in my library. I am going to move the young adult who I want to adopt them in together, but wondered if there was a way they could adopt them so the game recognizes them as adopted children
  • I don't think there is, and I don't know of any mods that let you. Your only option is to merge the households and have the adopter adopt the kids as care dependents.
  • Since you are willing to use cheats, if you merge households you can go to cas.fulleditmode and change the relationship from roommate to child.

Or, you could make it part of the story. The children were taken in by another family but not officially adopted.
  • I'm not sure, but I think with parenthood (or maybe just base game) you can move kids into your sims house and have your sim become their designated care giver. I'm not sure though. I'm just assuming because I saw someone do it with their sims on YouTube.

The game will never recognize the kids as "adopted" only as "daughter" or "son" under relationships. So defintely add them to your game, merge the households. Use "cas.fulleditmode" go to cas and tehn edit their relationship. As part of the story you can use the "Money ___" cheat to take away the $1000/perchild like you were adopting them. Maybe even before have them be in a household with a social worker, meet them at like a government building as part of the story, get to know them a little bit and then Shift+click "add to family" when you build up high enough friendship because I'm pretty sure "Ask to Move in" is not available for kids. This is a super cute idea though! Happy simming!
  • Thanks everyone. What I did was I went ahead and moved him in (the adult "dad" who was going to adopt them....he had started falling in love with their mother in a crossover / collab video we did), did the adopt as caregiver thing, and used MCCC to add the relationship as father and daughter (the baby I will have to wait until he ages up).

@izbthnndgls, I wish I would have thought of creating a "social worker", that's a really good idea! Thank you everyone for all of your help!
  • I have an orphanage in my game for unwanted or orphaned children.

Sometimes I will have a family go and meet the kids and pick out one or two they like and have them stay over for weekends before finally 'adopting' them and moving them in.
  • MCC has an option to adopt neglected children. If it doesn't have any children to adopt out it, it will also create children to be adopted by NPC families. Babies can also be adopted (I have it set for baby to teen). Neglected babies are taken and placed into a NPC family, so it also helps if you miss a feeding, and your baby gets whisked away.

In my game Nancy had a twins with Mr. Kim, at the end of her adult stage (i have ageing with pregnancy enabled) thanks to a certain mod that cant be named.

Anyways, when they where toddlers she died of old age. Mr. Kim was also dead because he was already an elder, so he couldn't get toddlers. Geoffrey was in an old folks home, so he couldn't take them. So the twins were automatically adopted by Malcolm, as the twins and Malcolm share the same last name.

Edit: They do retrain their family status, say grandmaw gets the children, they will still be labeled as grandchildren. Same with Aunts/Uncles/Parents
Ex: Malcolm is still considered their brother.
