New Computer Recs?

Hi All,

I've been given the unfortunate "imminent HD failure" notice on my current Windows laptop so I'm shopping around and gathering ideas for my next computer purchase.

Anyone play on Windows laptop and have the game play smoothly? My current laptop is an HP Windows 10 1 TB HDD. After some research, it seems Dell laptops with SDD drives are probably most reliable and have a longer lifespan than my current computer. Any thoughts on brand? I'd like to get a laptop that has potential to last a few years longer than my current one... which is about 3 years old?

Before Windows, I did have a Mac, which I do miss somewhat. Wondering... how does sims 4 play on Apple, Mac players?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • I can't tell you much about computers, but my son told me when I was buying not to get a dell. They had one built from Dell and it was junk. They ended up selling it almost immediately as it didn't work for them, and 6 months later a friend who had bought it said the hard drive died. They had another Dell computer and that I don't remember why, but they were not happy with that either. My son says to avoid Dells.
  • I sympathise. I downloaded HP's machine check and found my own HP is now reported to be suffering from a battery failure with a blown fuse but as I dropped it against a metal radiator it's possibly not HPs' fault. I've never had problems with them before and they survive a lot of hard knocks with me. I have to ring them tomorrow as they've provided a phone number with it having two months extended warranty to go.

I never tried Dell but don't like Acer. You could try an Asus Rog.... It depends how much you want to spend

How about putting in something like 'best laptops 2020' in your browser. I found these good sites....

    You could try here

  • First question: Why a laptop over a desktop?

You can upgrade a desktop and replace failing parts on them. You also get higher specs on a desktop than a laptop for the same price. They also are better designed for gaming in general due to air flow around the internal parts.

Totally understand however if you need the mobility and can only afford one computer.
  • My Dell laptop (Alienware) never gave me any trouble and plays Sims 4 fine with no lag despite being a few years old. I don’t use it anymore because I got a desktop recently, but I wouldn’t recommend against it.

More important than brand is making sure you get a laptop with the right specs and a good warranty policy. All brands can break especially after a few years of heavy use. If your computer messes up, you want to be able to get it fixed with minimum hassle.
  • My wife has had a couple of Dell desktops over the years and they’ve never been a problem.

    Good question!

I live in a very tiny apartment in San Francisco -- my room literally does not have space for a full desktop. I also like the convenience of being able to take my computer with me, as I do more than just gaming on it :)
  • Well it appears there is definitely some mixed input in this thread haha. I asked about Dell because, according to my research, it seemed to be the most reliable & longest lifespan -- but I guess there would be various factors that play into it.

All I know is this is my second HP in a few years and I just don't see them as very reliable now, personally. But they do have some models that sure are affordable! ~
  • I love my Asus. It is 5 yrs old and still runs great. I still play all sim games with no lag. I've never even had any problems play sims 3.
  • I've never had trouble with all my previous HP's but updates and support for them is very important and that informs my choices when buying.....

My faulty Omen HP laptop 3/4 years old with extended warranty is being collected tomorrow with free repair for fused battery after ringing HP up today so I can recommend them for quickly dealing with faults. They bring the box to put it in it too. They even rang me back when my phone suddenly cut off. Nice people. If you download and go through their diagnostics test tool (on Support) they tell you exactly what you have to do if they find something wrong and you find they've got the details ready when giving the report number.

This was my umpteenth laptop from them and the first I have had to return for repair. This one got a knock so that's probably what did it. The old ones just bought to keep up with Sims 1 to 3!

No Sims 4 until I get it back though as my backup is a littl'un. :'(
