Overweight toddlers from very thin parents?

Why not, I don't think weight is genetically inherited, neither in the game nor in real life. I've seen thin parents have chubby kids and the other way around as well. So it doesn't bother me, But if it bothers you there's a way to change it.
I think the way it works in the game by default is that it's random, or I don't know if it has anything to do with how much you feed your sims as babies/toddlers/children.
If you wish to change that there is a setting in MC Command Center where you can enable weight and body part values to be inherited by parents when sims age up to teens.
Open the MC CC Settings Menu by clicking on a computer. You have to find and enable this option:
MC CAS > Offspring... > Use Parent Physical Attributes

I don't know if there's anything you can do about it before they become teens, your only option may be to edit them through CAS.

Could it be how much they eat when not hungry? I wonder if feeding them as babies when they weren't hungry has an impact? I imagine it probably would.

I've noticed that toddlers will only eat half a plate of normal food (not toddler dishes). Maybe if you force them to eat it all, they will get too many calories? I don't know. To me, it seems all sims become overweight sooner or later if they don't exercise regularly.

Yeah I've actually had the same question for a while. But I've also noticed that when babies aren't hungry they will reject being fed. So maybe this feature is there to prevent overfeeding them by mistake when they need social or a diaper change. I'm sure eating when not hungry should affect their weight when they're toddlers and children though.

Oh, perhaps that's the difference between the main food and the toddler food? The main food is a bit much for them but the toddler food is just right?

I've been watching a 100 baby challenge on YouTube and at first the player fed the household salads,
I think primarily because salads are made quickly and because the process doesn't have the risk of a fire in the game.
Anyway, my point is the teens would all grow up slim. Then the player started making grilled cheese instead and from then on the kids were chubby teens.

How many agree with me? I prefer skinny teens, not because I'm against people who are overweight, I'm about 30 pounds overweight, but because skinny teens look like teenagers while chubby teens look like adults.

Uh yes, weight is absolutely genetic. No doubt about it. My doctor(s) have told me this countless times.

Some of the teens look creepy when they are thin because their shoulders and hips are so narrow already. Some adults in real life are short and small-framed.

You've given me something to think about..I literally do this, I force toddlers to eat the whole (normal food) plate so they don't get hungry quickly!
I also do what others said earlier..I feed babies when they're not hungry so they don't wake me up in middle of night to feed them..
I honestly never realized those things will affect weight..from now on I'll let toddlers eat more their food and not force them to the whole plate and only feed babies when they're hungry..

Most of the time I feed my sims fruit salad and tofu tacos (they're mainly vegetables and fruit right?) Aren't they counted as low fat food?
But the problem aren't mainly my sims, its other babies from other thin parents household (that I made try for baby) that when baby grows up the toddlers is overweight while his parents are skinny..

so the problem extends to households I'm not even controlling too..
