"Sad", "Angry" and Other Emotions
I’ve been playing The Sims 4 for a while now, and I can definitely say it’s the best game in the series so far. Despite many features from previous games not being included, what The Sims 4 brings definitely brings a great experience.
I’ll probably post a full review on it sometime in the feature, but there’s one particular part I wasn’t too happy about. We were promised expressive Sims that would experience a whole gamut of emotions, but so far, in my experience, many of the negative emotions including “Sad” and “Angry” have been incredibly rare.
The only negative emotions my Sims seem to get often are “Uncomfortable” and “Tense”. Aside from those, they’ve been pretty much spammed round-the-clock with positive ones.
My Sim enters a well decorate room, Happy moodlet.
My Sim goes to the park, Happy moodlet.
My Sim has a funny conversation, Playful moodlet.
My Sim is competent when cooking a meal, confident moodlet.
My Sim performs romantic interactions, Flirty moodlet.
Considering how tremendously easy it has been to get into a positive emotional state, emotions like “Sad” and “Angry” have been neglected. To get my Sim into one of those states, I have to try really hard and even then, it’s a challenge. I couldn’t even make a Sim Angry without having at least two Sims in the household and having the other Sim initiate Mean interactions.
There are exceptional moments where those emotions are common, but on a Sim’s day-to-day life they have been rare. “Embarassed” is a little bit less rare, but still not common either. I’m not even sure how “Bored” works because I’ve got so little chance to try it.
"Uncomfortable" and "Tense" have been the only negative moodlets my Sims have gotten commonly, and those are the two least fun emotions to play with, especially Uncomfortable.
For example, I’ve been playing the legacy challenge. I would have expected that all the troubles caused by living in a tiny legacy dwelling would have caused my founder Sim to become Sad a lot, but it did none of that. Even at the very start of the challenge, he had predominantly positive emotional states with the exception of Uncomfortable and Tense, and even those got rarer and rarer as I improved the legacy house.
Same with socializing, I would expect having a bad conversation would make a Sim Sad or Angry. Only deliberately aggressive interactions have been able to make Sims Angry.
Has anyone else been having this problem? or do you think it’s just my play style? Has anyone actively had Sims who were Sad or Angry, or some similar emotion, without having to go to great lengths to make them that way?
I’ve been really enjoying the game so far, but the way certain emotions have been neglected has been bothering me. Hopefully there will be mods to fix the problem. I know that there are traits that make Sims get certain emotions more, but those should only make them more common (like Cheerful does with Happy) not be practically needed to get Sims into those emotions regularly.
