Seasons: "Ruined the tree"

Question

How does one ruin a tree during Winterfest by putting a random topper on it? I took it back down once I noticed this, and put another up, which relieved my sims' anger. I put the original one back up after deciding I didn't like the replacement, and the buff never came back. Is it just a random event?

Consider yourself lucky. Placing the star on my tree caused it to burst into flames. It was glorious.

I have had so many Winterfests with unlit trees out of sheer paranoia!!
