Should I turn Alexander Goth into a Merman?

In my game, merfolk, elementals, vampires, and spellcasters that drink a potion of immortality are all immortal. They are protected from death by old age, and I don’t age them past young adult.

In my story, Ember Zalrian is a Fire Elemental and Spellcaster. She’s immortal but her boyfriend, Alexander, is mortal.

There are a few story paths I’m debating on:

Ember’s older brother and Water Elemental/ Merman could offer Alexander Immortality by giving him the magic mermadic kelp.

On the other hand, Ember’s younger sister, an Earth Elemental/ Vampire could turn Alexander into a vampire.

Ember, herself, could brew a potion for Alexander and possibly turn him into a spellcaster.

Alexander could end up an immortal human after drinking a potion.

To contrast Werewolves from Vampires, I am not going to make werewolves immortal in my game.

Alexander can’t become an Elemental because the Sulani Mana trait is genetic and requires an Elemental Parent.

The main thing going for turning him into a merman is the world he lives in now. Alexander lives in Sulani with Ember, and Sulani is mostly water. Most of my sims in Sulani are mermaids or mermen.

  • I think your merman concepts look great! My Alexander is a spellcaster with the erratic and bookworm and creative traits. So it's kind of appropriate that earlier today my sim ran into him in the magic realm talking to a bookshelf.

I kind of lean spellcaster so you don't risk any hybrid problems. But I do like the merman look.

The hybrid thing is my biggest concern. I know that if Alexander becomes a merman, He and Ember won’t be able to have a child together. The hybrid would be bugged. Still, I can’t let all my sims have children either. Too many played households.
  • @Daephene If Alexander becomes a merman, I’m going with the Reef Form because he’ll be living in tropical Sulani. It kinda goes against the Macabre theme, but Sulani is just such a bright world.
  • As for the Deep Sea form, I’m thinking someone in the Hollow will be taking that form.
  • So after careful consideration, I think my Alexander Goth will become a Reef Merman. I feel like the Reef Appearance is the most suitable for where he will be living, and I’m thinking that Ember and Alex won’t have kids. My save just can’t support them having kids.

Another big reason for going against the popular vote is Alexander’s Traits. He’s a Bookworm, Geek, and Music Liver, and I think it’ll be his interest in music that makes it work.

Creating the Deep Sea Appearance did give me some ideas for existing sims in my story.

  • For what it's worth, I have playable hybrids in my game without the help of mods. I had a merman and an alien woman have two children. Both of them are equal parts alien and merfolk. They both have an alien form, all the alien powers, a merfolk form, and all the merfolk powers. The issue is that they don't function right in CAS, but their forms work perfectly fine in-game. One of them has grown up to have his own children, and they are still children and toddlers but so far one of them seems to be human with some alien powers, the next one seems to be a mermaid (alien powers tbd) and the third one is a baby. I know there *can* be glitches but they have been totally playable for me, and I love them.
  • If you look at the Plumbob when merchildren age up, you can see if they are hybrid compatible.

As you can see, Zalen has the Human Plumbob, but he's a natural born merman. This is a glitch that makes occult hybrids possible. It happens when merchildren age up or cheats are used to age them up. I didn't want to make Zalen anything other than a merman so I fixed it by making him eat mermadic kelp before school.

  • The glitch above is also why I think it would be helpful to have children that are actually occults. The game struggles with the sudden change in a merman or mermaid’s life state.
  • Honestly, I suspect that, if you have two merfolk try for baby and use CAS.fulleditmode to skip the child life stage, you could recreate the glitch that causes merfolk to be recognized as human while retaining their mermadic powers. I mean, Zalen was a toddler for a bit and I used that cheat to jump straight into the teen life stage so he could be played as a merman.
