What online/multiplayer options would you find acceptable in a Sims game?

The starting point for this poll is: we already have some online features in The Sims: as of now, it's only the gallery and the ability to comment on others' creations, download and favorite them, run challenges by uploading shells and letting others edit them. The core of the game is single-player and I personally don't think that part is going away anytime soon in a future installment. That said, adding more online and multiplayer features has clearly been on EA's and the devs' minds for a long time.
So I figured it would be interesting to know what level of multiplayer/online would people here be okay with.

Umbrella assumption #1:
Any online features would not be accessible to Simmers with a child account (as they are now). Only Teen+ accounts would be allowed to take advantage of them.

Umbrella assumption #2:
Any multiplayer feature is in addition to the typical single-player functionality (with the exception of option 6) and not a requirement to participate in (to make the game still fully functional for players under the specific ages excluded from online features by law).

Question: What kind of multiplayer options would you find acceptable in an upcoming Sims game?

1) Gallery only
Just the gallery sharing as it is at the moment: uploading lots, rooms, and households, favoriting and downloading other Simmers' creations.

2) Gallery + Friend sharing
Being able to share creations with friends only (as well as public sharing of lots, rooms, households for the whole community). Being able to send creations directly to someone you're friends with either on the gallery or on Origin.

3) Community neighborhood
Ability to bring your Sim to an online neighborhood accessible to other Simmers, uneditable lots/areas that maybe have a cafe where your Sim can order food and drink or item and food stalls with unique items that can't be purchased with a DLC. Areas designed for skill-building where Sims could mentor others if their skill is high enough. If your Sim is the one mentoring, they can earn Simoleons for their effort.

4) Socializing community areas
An online area that works as a giant chatroom where you can bring your Sim and talk to others directly.

5) Semi-online experience
Two sections of the game: a typical single player that's closed off to anyone else and a multiplayer open section where anyone can join in and interact with what you create. If you build in the communal area, your creation can be modified by others, items removed or added, etc. Something like, for example, certain Roblox games where you can join a server and it's open to anyone. Possibly an ability to create areas with access limited to friends only.

6) Fully online MMO
Everything is online and open to the public. You can purchase a lot and build on it, set access to public or friends only (like setting up a social media account), run a business where other Simmers can send their Sims to eat or participate in activities. Story progression created by other Simmers around the world.

7) Sims Freeplay model
Ability to visit worlds of people you've friended, special in-game currency obtainable by visiting friends' lots or neighborhoods, community challenges and events (working towards a common goal), DLC packs and currency purchasable via an in-game store (micro-transactions or direct purchases).

8) Single-player only.
No online features. Creations are only shareable by directly sending someone a file or via an exchange site.

9) Other
There are tons of other possibilities: Simmer profiles being expanded so you could share more than just lots, rooms, and households. A "dashboard" kind of feature where you could share screenshots or text posts about and from your game. A way to cooperate on a build in real-time (there is a mod for it at the moment but it's not 100% flawless since the core mechanic isn't in the game). Build challenges included directly in the game itself. Rewards for maintaining a streak in playing daily.
If you have ideas that you think would work for a Sims game that are online and/or multiplayer, sound off in the comments.

If you think anything at all multiplayer/online is a bad idea, just click option 8 ;)

  • The gallery is a great addition, I hope to see something similar in future sims games.
Visiting community lots created by others without altering each others game is as far as I want to go.
If anyone else can alter my save I am out.
  • I think challenges being implemented in game would be cool, like being able to put rules for a challenge into the game and have the game keep track of the rules and goals. Otherwise, I really only want hands off stuff like the gallery.
  • I’d love to be able to create shared worlds, but only if we could control who gets invited, and only if it’s optional. I’d also like a full-featured world creator to facilitate this.

I imagine there’d be a lot of role-playing potential in a shared world, like an RP server in an MMO - given the right mix of players. That’s why we’d need control of who can join.

Instanced/online lots or regions are something that would interest me as well. Maybe my world is entirely my own, but maybe I can make certain lots (a club, for example) an online instance so that the sims within are all player-controlled. Or maybe I could set a “downtown” area to be comprised of real players.

I don’t like to be closed-minded as a rule, so I think there is potential for online features to be used in a positive way, provided they don’t force them upon those who aren’t interested.
  • Gallery is the right way to go. It encourages creativity and sharing and I would rather see them improve on that. People should be able to choose what they want in their game. If they really want the sims to have more online functionality, then it should be optional and be focused on sharing things with others. They could add things like being able to populate the world with sims from the gallery, no more weird-looking townies.

If they're looking at some form of multiplayer added to the usual single-player game, I think it's a good sign that we're not going to end up with the same start as TS4 (aka a MMO converted into a SP on an impossible deadline).

Hopefully EA will go the same route as they did with Respawn Entertainment. They were allowed to make a single-player game (Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order) but they did also a separate multiplayer-title (Apex Legends). Both were incredibly successful which gives me a small hope that if they will make the sims multiplayer then it will be a separate game.

Multiplayer will probably also not work very well either if they want to sell packs like they did with the sims4. If you download a house in the sims4 that has DLC that you have not bought, then the house is incomplete, that is not going to work online.

  • I love the gallery. That makes my life a whole lot easier. While I enjoy other people's houses and sims in my game, I don't want the actual other person in my game controlling or changing anything. In fact, most things I download and place into my game from the gallery get small edits from me to them anyways.

A community section or separate server/game for multiplayer, that I could ignore, I could be ok with I guess, as long as it didn't interfere or break my game in any way. That includes getting the updates and bug fixes it needs, that single player doesn't get ignored in favour of the multiplayer.

I don't want always online/multiplayer gameplay being shoehorned into my sims experience. If I want to play an EA MMO I will go back to playing SWTOR.
  • I chose “Other” but I really would only like the gallery to be upgraded to share more. I would like to be able to install and manage CC within the game, instead of going out to play whack a mole with what is broken and what is not. Maybe they could have some form of Creator for recolours and meshes, so we get the benefits of Create a Style and colour wheel without bogging down game performance as much.

Maybe contests and competitions within the gallery too but that is the extent of multiplayer.

Upgrades and additions to the Gallery. If that comes in the form of direct contact with friends via sharing, or touring uploaded houses in a shared instance, that’s fine.

But I have ZERO interest in having random people in my game, shared chat rooms or worlds, “competitions” or visiting other people’s worlds. I don’t play this game for social anything. Sims is ME TIME. I have other games that are for socializing.
